Lou Wainman discusses Flysurfer's dorky image

Postby Pump me up » Sun Aug 20, 2006 4:22 am

In his recent "Kiteforum" interview, Lou mentioned Flysurfer's "dorky" image.

While it is widely acknowledged "on the beach" that ram airs ARE generally ridden by nerds, it was good to hear it straight from the horse's mouth.

Not only are ram airs aerodynamically inferior compared to inflatables, they DO have an image problem.

This isn't just a case of "style" winning over "substance." Inflatables DO look cooler than ram airs - no question. But the better handling and aerodynamic function of inflatables means they dominate in comps and market share ie a victory for "substance".

Ram airs are inferior compared to inflatables.... they look worse and handle worse. In "style" and "substance", ram airs are inferior compared to inflatables. There's a reason for Flysurfer's "dorky" image - dorks fly their kites.

How come the new Flat kites resemble foils so much these days. Alot of people agree flat kites are the kites of the future, and C's will eventually go the way of the 2 liner.

Then what?

There's also alot of guys on this forum that are big fans of the one pump system, and say they willl never fly a kite that doesn't have a one pump again. No one pump means it takes to long to pump up there kite. What happens when these people discover Flysurfers No Pump System?

That thought must send chills up your spine.

J.

Tighter turning without backstall. lass water eating (but right starting technique is necessary),
massive Depower, extremely performing (upwind, bigair, Kiteloop,…).
Lou Wainman was riding the PS³ with his pulley bar and a surfboard. No problems at all with Backstall.

The PS³ is not competing with Bow´s, C-Kites, …
They have to compete against the PS³ as it does it all.

MO about rams.
Aerodynamicaly they look way more efficient than LEIs (at least "Cs").
The spiderweb holding them doesn't.
Inflation is the best out there.
Probably my lack of skill, but I have never had a good session on one (tried numerous times).
Deflating them can be a pain, specially when wet or soggy.
I admire the ram riders tenacity (all of them).

Hi PMU

I was 3rd in the final of the 2nd run in the PKRA Boardercross. And that with a inferior foil as the oldest competitor ;-).

That is a bit better than TOP 50 PKRA, isn’t it. Have fun, what ever you prefer.

Bye, Armin

Maybe you should take it as a complement, Armin, if flysurfer is that "inferior" imagine how good you must be to counter for the badness of the kite. If you were kiting on c kites or bows, you'd be world champ

Must feel really good to get such results. Comming in third on a kite you designed, developed, prototyped, put into production and marketed :thumb:
