One doctors opinion?? Keep looking for an answer. Never give up on something you love. They told me when I destroyed my ankle..."you'll never be able to run/surf/ski again" Wrong, less than a year. When "they" diagnosed me with a heart condition "they said no more cycling/skiing surfing... "you'll be on meds for the rest of your life." Wrong, less than a year a nutritionalist had me off all meds and feeling fantastic. The body can and wants to heal itself if given the proper chance/nutrition. Find that answer. Don't believe in I can't. Best of luck to you. Believe

hiyall,

im going through some major health issues at the moment due to a wierd
autoimmune response to a tropical infection that is causing my blood
clotting mechanism to go haywire. it looks like i will need to take blood
thinning medication (coumadin) for the rest of my life.

From sounds of things ( you having been into a lot of adrenalin sports) look after your mental health no1( ie you probably need to be doing some level of risk to stay sane!.) - good mental health can heal the physical i reckon. Gardening isn't going to replace them... But you doing right thing sussing out risk level I reckon.

There are also risk levels within the individual sports depending on your actions/ plan. Kiteboarding is a little more complex than the others.. Weather... Equipiment... Decisions...

V Hard to answer not knowing more... Some docs are awesome, some full of sh1t! Second and 3rd opinions from sports specialist.. the average doctors is not like us! ... ( Not web search based!)

Hmmmmm. I have a mate whose son has hemophilia and he does all sorts of impact related stuff. Racing bmx, mountan bikes, soccer....

I agree with others. Get more than one opinion. Also doctors do not neccessarily understand the sports they advice you not to do. Their advice is usually over courteous and general. I had one useless doctor tell me just not to lift anything for the rest of my life and don't bother getting the a basic hernia fixed...... I was 28 at the time. Bloody useless doctor.

Anyway. Watersports are the least risky for injury compared to land based sports. As others have said. Any one of the surfing/windsurfing/kitesurfing can be riskier than the other dependent on skill and how crazy you go and what skill you already have.

Personally, I have had very little injury from kitesurfing. And I have done some crazy shit. If you have built skill and can ride around without continuously without falling off then I say its all on carry on kiting. Lets face it 99% of the time a crash means you fall into the water with no injury.

My thoughts would be to carry on kiting. Its safer than pretty much all land based adrenaline sports for minor injuries. Suit up with some safety gear. Impact vest, Helmet, full wetsuit, maybe even booties in coral, rocky locations

Ride in low to intermediate winds. Don't do too many tricks. Teach yourself some board kicking away techniques, learn to ditch the board so it doesn't hit you in a crash. Make sure your launch/land techniques are dialled and or you have a kite launcher/lander handy. Then get out there and enjoy.

Life is all about change and adaption, your's is a tough change to get use to. At the same time, life and health are worth it. You might consider getting into diving if the doc's think that is ok. Impacts are fairly common in all three prospective board sports you mentioned. The force and injury of the impacts will vary but they still go with the activities. That means hitting gear, hitting yourself with the board on wipeouts, the rig in wipeouts with windsurfing, kiting is academic I think. Hitting other things goes above and beyond that with varying risk. So, does it just bruise and heal in your case or do you develop a lingering hemotoma that is reluctant to heal?

How much impact will it be if you go out on a surfboard in 15 knots ?
Maybe even strapless ?

Something may be coming in the near future! For external cuts from fins, lines, etc (shark teeth), this could possibly help one stay safe with a particular health issue like yours.
