Alternatives to kitesurfing?

Postby old man » Sun May 06, 2007 11:27 am

Does anyone have an ‘alternate’ sport that compares to kitesurfing?
I’ve come to the conclusion that I love it but don’t live in a place that’s conducive, as far as the wind’s concerned. I thought it was me just getting frustrated but then looked back at my new log book and found out of 15 attempts I’d only managed 3 successful sessions – there were 2 sessions I could blame myself rather than the weather, but even accepting responsibility for those occasions only takes it up to a 33% success rate!
Any advice greatly appreciated.

I dunno how comparable they are but I go surfing or diving according to the conditions....
wind + waves / no waves = kiting
no wind + waves = surfing
no wind + no Waves = diving

and then I do some other sports, but they don;t take that much priority...

You could always move.
Are the local conditions that bad that kitesurfing is not an option?

Like tautologies, I've got a few other options..mountain bikes, sea kayaks, diving, work....and I've tried quite a few other thrills, but so far nothing pushes my buttons like a good session kiting.

lets see. besides skydiving and paragliding the next best high is gonna be meth. (at least thats what my friends, friend told me). Just think how much weight you'll lose. No more pesky bank account....

yes, if you love it, move!
Don't let yourself get captured in a life you might not want!
Take your chance before it is too late!!!

I suggest: Brazil, Australia, Peru, Tarifa

Only alternative I could think of is wave riding?
Got no waves as well? MOVE!

Good luck for all!

Thanks for suggestions. Think I'll try conventional surfing - we get some great waves up this way, and I know we're supposed to have some of the best (don't know how you qualify 'best'?) mountain biking in the UK.
I think it's a case of if it's not working, accepting the conditions (after all there's nothing I can do about it), and making alternate arrangements rather than sitting in front of Internet weather sites hoping things will change - I waste hours!!!

Buy yourself a kick arse second hand wakeboard boat from the states...............check the classifieds on wakeworld.com and get some mates together and thrash the hell out of that on super flat days. Killer deals

Thats what we do in the summer when winds can be lighter and i'm going for 360 handle passes wake to wake, tantrums, backflips, the works now. Its a slightly diff technique but it rules. Plus you can take chicks out in the boat to hang out or go round in a circle with all the weight on one side and wake surf.

They even have a WAKE KITE out now which you tow and when you do wake to wake jumps you can get big air kinda like wake/paragliding...............its all out there, you just gotta find it!!! Haven't tried this one though. think i'll stick to normal kiting. http://www.wakekite.com

Have fun

My lightwind alternative is bodyboarding, and I'm currently thinking of getting into the whole sea kayaking thing as well........should mean I have some way of getting onto the water no matter the conditions

Don't you guys also have a job and a family that need attention.
I am in the situation where I can't go even when the wind is there because of either job or my 3 kids (3½ years, 2 years, 2 years). On top my house also need maintenance once in a while.
Think it is even more frustrating not to go kiting when the wind is there!

Still manage 40-45 session a year though (Denmark = too cold in the winter).

But if no obligations: Move
