I can see that looks like unsettled weather but what exactly about the scene in the pic says updraft? Forgive my ignorance - I'm no weather expert.

and some people go out in these conditions...unbelievable!
So easy to see!
Always have an eye on the clouds, and if dark stuff like this comes...down with the kite! And watch the water once you come close to shore...normally you can see the gusts!

Maybe that picture doesn't do the conditions justice?? But, that looks like normal unsettled weather for our neck of the woods.

basically the picture is the bottom of a very tall dark thunderhead also know as cumolonimbus, in this case though the base was quite low and the wind was whipping crazily around, as it got closer it rained heavily and thundered etc... The movement of water vapour upwards quickly with high moisture content and with angle of sun gives the deep sense of darkness..
