I just took my new Nano 9 out for the first time at Kitebeach in Maui--it started out 15-25 mph and within 45 min had jacked up to a gusty 20-35 mph. Waves were 1X-2X overhead--quite a day for the first try on the kite but it was great!
It handled the gusts well but with the short throw depower I had to use the straps quite a bit to completely depower it. The kite was very stable and predictable--smooth would be the best word for it. It was really fast both through the air as well as turning.
The launch at the beach was really sketchy, with 25 mph gusts followed by almost no wind. Even with the lulls, the kite was able to stay in the air, mine was one of the only kites not falling out of the air when going in and out of the beach.
The kite was great on the waves but it was tough going down the line since I was overpowered and the faces were too choppy. The few smooth waves I got it behaved well, I could either park it or power through the turns with it.
Jumping was good but not great, I was getting plenty high in these conditions. I had to really work the kite to make the landings reasonably soft.
I would say the only drawback was having to adjust the straps a lot to manage the gusts, but this was relatively minor and mainly due to the super gusty conditions, not something you get at most beaches most of the time. Its also something I was not used to since I am coming off of the X-bows which depower almost completely but with a much longer throw. I think I prefer the Nanos depower better because of the shorter throw. The Nano is also more controllable than the X-bows when depowered.
The kite was manageable over 30 mph but I had to work at it. I went in and rigged up my 7 m Switchblade (06) which was a bit easier to ride because of the smaller size. Although the kite was depowering a little better, it tended to flutter a lot when depowered, something the Nano does not do much. The Switchblade also went upwind a little better--maybe because it's flatter? I also like the direct feel of the Nano compared to the Switchblade. I had more fun on the Nano, just wish I had a smaller one today!
I was out on my new 16m Thruster at kitebeach yesterday when the wind was a fairly steady 15-20 mph. This is also a great kite! It's speed through the air and turns are more like a 12 m and the jumping is great although it took a little getting used to--again its a lot different from the x-bows, more like a C-kite--a lot of pop and float. The Thruster does not depower like the Nano or the X-bow--something I expected, but it has enough--certainly a lot more than C-kites and a lot of other hybrids I have tried. It's definitely a very stable kite in light air, again when taking off from the beach, the wind was lulling to almost no wind but the kite behaved well, no falling back in the window or falling out of the sky. I have also seen this in San Diego where I live, it's a good light wind kite due to its stability and speed. I still use my 14m Contra bow for super light winds (8-12 mph) due to its low end grunt, but the Thruster is more fun once it gets over 12 mph on a 150 cm twintip and especially on a surfboard (I weight 185 lbs). I have been trying quite a few other SLEs and hybrids lately and the Thruster 16 beats them all for light to medium wind.
I'm definitely going to get some more of these kites!

30 mph is too much for the NANO 9. Especially in the waves. I use the NANO 6 in 20 to 35 knots in the waves. The NANOs have so much power I can't believe you were able to wave ride in that much wind.
Even if you had to pull on the Depower Strap. The NANO 9 in the waves should be flown from 12 to 20 knots MAX.
But at least you did it and now you know that you need to go with the NANO 6 next time, that is if you have one.
Thanks for the review, I hope this will help other riders out there.

If anyone wants to learn how to ride waves, the Nano 6 is the kite for you!
I grew up surfing on the Big Island of Hawaii. I come from a
surfing background, 26 years of surfing every kind of break you could
imagine.
I really liked the 07 Nano 6 but it was a little to fast and didn't have low end
power. This years 6 is just sick in the waves! I knew from the first day I
flew it and there were no waves I just wanted to get a feel for it.
The 2nd time out was a dream session in the waves! the kite is so responsive,
you can fly it with one hand not a problem.
I was out on a 6 when everyone else was flying 12's, they couldn't believe I was
on a 6.
The wind was blowing about 20-25 sideshore and really gusty.
I weigh 160lbs and I was riding a 5'2 Placebo.
YOU JUST HAVE TO GET ON ONE IN THE WAVES
AND SEE FOR YOURSELF.
