My dog has a bunch-a dreads right around his bung hole and so far he's made no mention of it affecting his kiteboarding one way or the other.

Wait until they get wrapped around your bar.
Hapened to a friend of mine windsurfing, he got close to drowning and cut them immediately thereafter.
For your info

Dreads dry slowly. Palmrolling helps to get the water out. I have not found any problems with dreads regarding kiteboarding. Go for it.
If you use a helmet, you might have to change to a bigger one.

It takes a while to get dreads really tight and "rock hard", Depending on how much you ride, the water will actually de-tangle any loose hair and makes it tough to keep them looking natty. The problem isnt so much when your dreads are wet, its the sand. As far as drying,...just shake em.
I've never had any problem with getting my dreads caught on something,...but i usually tie-em back or wear a helmet,...which will need to be sized to accomodate your locks.

I was thinking about getting really small fine dreads....maybe pencil thin. I was thinking with smaller dreads they will dry faster and act more like hair but still be dreads, the best of both worlds.

The best of all worlds is a crew cut or no hair.
This will leave you more time to think about more important things.
