I can see that some kiteboarders are hooked to their leashes as drug addicts are hooked to crack. You can tell them 10,000 times to stop using them and they don't get the message. Please upload pictures or video links to this post related to injuries due to accidents caused by the use of leashes. Maybe this could save a set of teeth or a life. Maybe it could be you.

Why stop there?
How about some kite death photos...
there are dozens, and dozens, and dozens, and dozens, and dozens, and dozens of those.
How many leash deaths can you site? none that i know of...
Spread the love honestly if you're looking to save the masses from deadly gear choices...

"At the time, [he] was still wearing a rubber suit and had cling film and "gaffer tape" around him"
in my opinion; was his choice.
Accidents are sad but a very good learning point. Let your kids play with paper clips in the socket.

if someone decides to take the risk and leash the kite in suicide mode, than it is their decision.
I think there is nothing you can do about it. Maybe they will have a kitemare one day due to this, then they might think differently about it.
Don't waste your energy on this, it is better to use your energy and good will to make sure beginners know what they do, and people have enough distance to others etc. That will be better usage of your energy.
Or start official rules, where it says that suicide leashes are forbidden by law...

Are we talking about kite leashes or board leashes? The original post sounded like board leashes to me.

I really liked my board leash. I used a helmet and back in the days of C kites when I was spending a LOT more time learning to relaunch the kite, it was nice to not worry about the board swimming away from me in deep water. Plenty of times when the lines got fouled and I didn't get to launch the kite I would have lost the board. So, it was one less thing to worry about. Once I was up and riding regulalry I stopped using the leash but kept it back there for emergencies. It has come in handy on dozens of occasions when my kite went down in light air and deep water. Its nice to clip in and forget about it and then unclip the board when I'm ready to ride.
I finally took the old reel off my harness and threw an old kite leash around my waist instead (just to clip the board in emergencies, when I need both hands and don't want to mess with it). The reel was getting old and I didn't want to land on it in shallow water and hurt my ass.
Anyway, I think they can be used carefully and depending on the water you kite in (currents and depth) they can really help out the learning curve. Sure, you can say "learn to body drag first" but if your kite isn't in the air you can't do that and the board will get away from you.
I would agree that it is best not to use them, but if its right for you just be careful about it. They can work. Wear a helmet.
