Rick your analysis of this accident was seriously flawed. You wanted to so badly for there to be a giant gust that took him for a giant ride. The wind came up, but the meter clearly says there was not massive gust. The guy was clearly overpowered and accidently sent the kite like you would for a jump. After his impact he did a kite loop. All this from 35 mph of wind.

This keep it low will save your ass crap is such bullsh1t it's unbelievable. Rick has spent so much time and effort advertising it, that people take it as fact. At the very least it's a huge over simplification of the problem, but really it's pretty much complete crap.

Rick I don't know if you've repeated to same lies in your own head so many times you believe them. I don't know why you feel so insecure that you get hyper-defensive and go on the personal attack when people say stuff that goes counter to what you say. If you want to be the safety man, you can't bend the facts to fit your model/brand.

Satan, you devil. There may have been a localized gust that was 20-30mph more than the chart shows. With squalls this is not unusual. And 300 yards up the beach may have been less than that chart indicates.

On that day, the only safe place for that kite was in da-bag.

I think this is more a Florida problem than anything else...

I only say that because most places have better wind, meaning are not in Florida.

maybe, it's time to look past the Nature and consider the Nurture...

Florida is notorious for months on end of no wind, or better said, zephyrs instead of wind; home of the twenty meter, dr. light wind and Mr. squall.

Hey, it's a case of the starved locals being stoked for squalls on the horizon...

Elsewhere, there's wind enough on the clear days that storm kiting doesn't have the draw it does in Florida.

check out the current weather map???

Any Question that place sucks for weather systems?

Note to those who aspire to obtain notoriety of the above board, legitimate kind:

Lay off the pussy pictures in your spreads (pun accepted) it just makes you out the unsavory salivating perv.

Fully 50% of your latest layout is comprised of pussy pictures...

your choice...but maybe try thinking chronically

PS @ Toby...

I don't like this real name game your team likes to play when challenged... it is clearly a diversionary tactic, and truly is off topic, as well as being a personal attack,

shame on all of you who must stoop to that level.

thanks for quoting me...it's why I post.

I don't care to obtain real name recognition for my contributions here, I happy enough to post anonymously; to stand or fall on only the merit of my words, not my job title, not my resume, not my education, not my charity work, but only on the merits of my text.

I think that's actually a stronger position.

When you seek recognition you clearly have a personal agenda...

too many people die kiting to justify these purely personal aspirations and agendas

Satan: the wind got stronger, if gust or not, it was too much and too onshore for the guys riding. Fact.
Have you ever put only 1% off the work of Rick into all of this, trying to make people aware of the dangers and helping with options to survive situations like this?
You don't even use your own name, hide behind a virtual name. Why should anyone pay attention to what you say?
The prudent kiter will bring his kite low, and pull the plug when approaching the shore in sever weather.
isn't that what Rick is saying? Isn't that what has been discussed in another topic already? So we agree on it.

Satan: you don't agree...what would you have done in this situation?

you'd understand if you lived in Florida...

it's their season / only chance for high wind kiting....

(the off season exceptions? few and far between)

Nice,

for posterity sake...

One would hope so, at any rate...

what went wrong?.......

the dude was out of control

thats what went wrong....

Unless you think he meant to do the whole superman thing!

Look its a bird .....no a plane.... no its KEVIN!

What do we as a community learn.....

Kiting during a tropical storm and/or hurricane is STUPID!!!!!!!! When people are advised to stay indoors and go inland is NOT the time to grab your board and head to the beach.

Kite high...low and go....either way..... if you're out in a tropical storm you are going to have unexpected gusts well over 50. The reason its classified a tropical storm is because it has winds between 30 and 60 knots.

Thats a range of 30 knots......

I don't know about you all but days when it is expected that the wind will fluctuate quickly up to 30knots is not the time to be out on the water......My GK Sonic has some great depower.....but not that much.

What went wrong.....Kevin "braved" a tropical storm...

then he made some follow up mistakes.... things that he both did, and didn't do........

most, if-not-all, of which would have not been an issue had he been flying his kite during a non-tropical storm day
