Bows vs Hybrids vs C for light wind

Postby travisjonak » Tue Sep 02, 2008 10:42 pm

Hey guys, so I went out to my local spot yesterday and had my whole quiver of Slingshot octanes. I love these kites up to the 14m, but the 16 is just so damn slow and heavy. One of my friends had left his 10m Airush Halo in my truck so I pulled it out just to see what it was like in the 10-13 mph winds. I was amazed, when my 16m octane barely had me moving, this 10m flat kite had me doing some 15 foot jumps in the gusts and almost staying upwind. I weigh 190lbs and was riding a 140X42 board. I can see that bows obviously are way better than C's for light wind, but how do the hybrids stack up and at which size would a guy my size want for the type of winds described? I've noticed that with C's as they get bigger and heavier the weight really starts to make the extra surface area pointless. I guess what it all boils down to is, what kind of kite should I get and why? Thanks boys and girls.

Hey there , I have an 8m octane, 05 9 & 06 13m fuels and 08 6 &9m Nanos.

The octanes are awesome but the12m>> 16m never had good bottom end and were small size wise to other kites.

9>>10m is the sweet size for a lot of kites. My 9m Nano has more bottom end than my 13m fuel. My 05 9m fuel has almost the same bottom end as my 06 13m fuel.

Flat kites in 12m size are a lot slower than the 10m size, except the SS Rev 13m which is a very fast kite for its size ( try one if you can, they feel a bit like an octane with heaps more power).

The real issue is that the actual area of a lot flat kites is a lot bigger than C kites for the same size, ie a 12m cabrinha = a 15m fuel size wise. A 9m Nano = an 11m fuel size wise, all the flat kites are way bigger area wise than 05, 06, C kites.

I notice the generators have got big with the 08 11.5m = my 06 13m fuel for size, and the 08 5.5m = my 06 8m octane in size, so its all over the place again like it used to be back in 2003.

On a bigger TT like you were using most 10m flat kites will go and jump alot better than 12m flat kites, so most of the 10m flat kites I've seen would = your 14m octane in actual area and have a higher projected area so do the maths and its easy to see why they are powerful in the light. :thumb:

most efficient -> less

foils- ultra flat LEI
bows
hybrids
c-shape

X-bow/swichblade r better than the contra....the deal is the contra exist in 17 , not the others, so if u r light weight, drop the contra and pick an other kite.

I agree (I have a Contra 14) for true light wind nothing beat my Flysurfer Speed 17
