interview with Susi Mai for kitemaina.com

Postby bgsniper » Tue Dec 09, 2008 10:04 am

Hello Susi and welcome to KITEMAINA.COM

When did you start kiting?

I first started to kite when a friend of mine, Gael, opened a school on Kitebeach and gave me some lessons. I remember I took one lesson back then and hated it. One year after that I got motivated again and decided I should give it another try. That was in spring 2002, but since I was still in high school I didn’t get to go more than once or twice a week. I wasn’t really into it back then, but when the PKRA event came to town in June I saw what it was really all about. It was also the first time I had seen girls riding and competing, and that was when I decided I really wanted to learn to kite. Of course back then I didn’t think about competition or anything like that, I just wanted to be able to fly through the air and have fun.

What other sports did you do prior to kiting? I saw your skydiving pics...
I surf a lot whenever I can and if I’m in oahu I go skydiving :) before kiting I didn’t really do any other sports except play playstation.

What was your first contest?
The PKRA in cabarete 2003. I got second place!

Who are your sponsors and how has the support been throughout the tour?
I’m happy to say that I have support from red bull, cabrinha and animal clothing. They are all very supportive and give me the freedom to choose what I do which is the most important thing to me.

What gear are you riding now?
switchblade 3 and caliber board. I ride straps most of the time but have been playing around with bindings every now and then.

Favorite trick ?
flat 3

You live in Dominican Republic , there are many Bulgarians there , do you have any BG fiends?
I had a class mate from bulgaria, other than that I only know one guy, Christo, who kites at my local spot.

Love & Hate?
Love Chocolate, Hate excess luggage

Music?
whatever is on the ipod on random :) lots of linkin park before kiting, some chilled reggae for driving around. Changes with every situation.

Thanks for the interview. Any parting words to your kiteboarding fans.
Boys, buy kites for your girlfriends! :)

I kited with a guy named Gael from Cabarete once. He said he was a friend and next door neighbor of Susie Mai and that she had recommended our island in southern Japan as she had made a trip here the year before for a magazine article. I wonder if it is the same Gael? It is really a small world sometimes.

Is Sisi Mai Susi's sister?..... (say it fast about 5 times.....)

Edit:
I have to retract this question on the grounds that the poster has corrected the title of the thread with the proper spelling of Susi's name. Consider this entry retracted.

Yes I know. I have read the article. He stopped here on the main island of Okinawa for a few days before heading to Ishigaki.
