What do the pro's ride in the waves??

Postby BBQFish » Wed Dec 10, 2008 5:56 pm

Just curious if they all use C-kites or tend towards the Delta's, or if there are any of them out on bows.

Seems to me that when i'm reading up on wave kiting, everybody has their own opinion but most of the times the riders that post aren't, with all do respect, high level riders.

So i'm looking for some gear talk from the folks that know their stuff.
Also let me know your weight, kitesize and the conditions you surf in.

Thanks!

High level rider. 90 kg.

From 1m to 5+m waves, always go out in sideshore/DTL conditions.

Use C kites 7-8-9-10m2 when it is good and go unhooked.
Use SLE 5-6-7 when it is rough, 30 knots+. Some few 09 SLE kites works unhooked.

I´m a low level rider.

But I can tell you about Guilly, world champ, who rides SLEs that would suck when flown by average riders. So the bottom line is: pro's can ride with anything. It´s the low level riders like us that must worry about gear!

High level rider, 74kg.

Use only SLE/Bow kites, no matter what the conditions, for waveriding.

Mostly hooked, unhooked only for the "physical" aspect, and nothing else 8)

For freestyle, I prefer a correct sized C kite (but very rare these days, I do freestyle, as it is only a fraction of the thrill and "feeling good" - compared to wavesurfing)

Delta's ? Hmmm - find them a bit boring somehow...

Kindly, Peter Frank

No, generally taken over a wider number of pros , it is not so...

Most still ride their preferred type, no matter what :thumb:

Experienced wave rider in side shore waves most sessions. 85kg on a strapped 6'2" std epoxy surfboard ie full rocker, soft rails the same as surfers use, only I put straps on it.

For 5 years up until 5months ago used C kites 5,7,9,13.

Now I use Delta C 's ,,,,,a 6m and a 9m

Why ? cos they turn tighter, are more responsive and faster than any C kite I've ever used and have a heap more range.

I found it easy coming from C kites to these cos they have a very similar feel only much faster.

I'm not a fan of most SLE's for my style of wave riding, cos most of the time I turn the kite aggressively and low in the window and I want a kite that will not hesitate low in the window, or go slow in the turn then surge and pull across the window.

I don't think Pro's are going to ride delta c kites much cos they are used often as entry level kites at a price point and that's not going to be good for business.

I think you will find that Pro's will ride what they are given from the company they ride for.
If they had a choice they would all like different gear, and most would stick with what they got used to.

Park and ride wave riding works on a lot of kites, but the conditions that it works in are very narrow in terms off wind angle and wave type.

A good wave kite has to be able to ride all conditions, especially more onshore which requires fast responsive kites that can turn as fast as you want to turn the board, especially in a down wind bottom turn.

Hope this all helps :thumb:

Doubt it, think most will grab a deal where they can. There are the elite who can pretty much get their preferred type of kite manufactured ie Hadlow, Len10......but I'm pretty sure most fly whats given to them.

But that then brings us onto do kites actually make that much of a difference........??? A good rider will pretty much be able to rip on what ever kite is given to them......marketing leads the public to believe that a certain type of kite is required for certain types of riding.

Not saying that pros ride kites that they don't like...........like I said a good rider will adapt to whatever they are given and then it becomes more to do with the skils of the rider and not the type of kite

These are just my thoughts tho, so could be wrong :thumb:
