North 09 Bar with trim adjustment below bar

Postby alkiter » Fri Jan 09, 2009 11:02 pm

Anyone else tried this setup? I moved the trim adjustment clam cleat below the bar to allow access to the trim adjustment and still retain full depower range with bar movement. In the original setup, to be able to reach the trim strap I had to set the clam cleat at least 1/3 of the way down. This reduced the depower available directly with the bar. Sometimes in violent gusts requiring fast depower, having to reach for the trim strap gets a lilttle sketchy. Although the bar is now about 2" further away at full power, it's actually more comfortable for me. I moved the steering leader lines up one knot to allow for the reduced bar travel in the powered postion. There is no interference with the Quick Release action. Seems to work fine and now I rarely need to adjust the trim.

That would be some mess for unhooked riding. Unhooked riding/tricks requires less components under the bar and more above. It is always easier IMO to adjust with strap above teh bar rather than below...

Seems like you get more depower in this setup, but don't you loose power? since you can't pull the bar as close to you as before? Or you shortened the control lines?

Looks good! you did what north should have done in factory :)

You have talked North into adding the Naish Smart Loop!

my 09 Evos do not need more than 2/3 bar travel of the factory setting to fully depower.
I find your set up interesting, but my experience with cleats below the bar is:

1. that the ergonomics are inferior to the above bar solution. Especially pulling the rope in heavy conditions in front of your belly needs much more effort than with further up positioned cleat.

2. the cleat "on top" of the CL makes the whole below-the-bar-system too long with the effect that smaller persons don´t find a conveniant arm position with bar too far away when powered.

All good comments.
1. For unhooked riding allows using the trim adjustment while unhooked. Really difficult to do that with the cleat above the bar.
2. I shortened the control lines one knot to make up for the reduced travel in the powered position.
3. Naish release can get jammed by the bar making it impossible to activate.

Ideally, the cleat should be integrated to the top of the QR slider, removing the extra length of the cleat and preserving the unobstructed travel of the QR.
