Looks like they made some changes...grand prize is now a 2009 Best Waroo 11m and trainer kite for overall best competitor. In addition to the kiteboards given for each event.

Judging

Postby Air Padre » Fri Mar 20, 2009 4:33 pm

The SPI Crew has decided to use a unique way of judging for the Freestyle / Slider event. Check it out...

http://spikiteroundup.com/index.php?opt ... &Itemid=90

Basically, there are no judges. Photographers that will take photos of the riders in the heats. That night everyone gets together and votes on the best photo, and the kiteboarder in the best photo wins the event. Everyone at the SPI Kite Round-Up gets to cast their vote. What do you guys think of this way of judging?

So is it $59 to demo kites?.. im confused

As for photo judging if you have fair coverage to all riders it sounds like a good idea so people can focus on their riding compared to when riders judge on eachother. KitePhotos do leave a bit out of the style of the rider and what trick was preformed. Like if a kiter is inverted your guessing it was a slim but many other tricks can be confused. Its a good idea for progressive judging but also a fine line. I hope it works out.

It shouldn't be a photo, but a short video of the trick being performed from the setup (right before leaving the water) to the finish (landing+riding away).

There's a lot that can be put into a trick from the point the rider leaves the water to the point where they land, including whether or not they actually land proper and rode away. Showing one frame would not be fair to the rider who threw an extra grab/spin/whatever vs a similar looking frame from a rider that performed a much more simple version of that trick or similar *looking* trick.

Also, a photo can be taken in such a way that the rider appears on or off balance and/or in or out of control. A video would give the judge more information to base his decision off of.

The only drawback would be the time it takes to edit the vid, and the time for the judges/crowd to view each video. Perhaps the riders can be limited to selecting only one or two of their best trick vids to put into the competition.

Edit: I guess a short series of pics of the trick might suffice as well.

Only one month left to get your travel arrangements finalized for the SPI Kite Round Up. Wind blowing 30+ for the past two days. Don't miss this opportunity to try all of the 2009 boards and kites for ten straight days! If your freezing where you are at now, make the trip down, it will definitely be worth it.

I'm almost ready to pack up the truck and head down today as its snowing again. I can't wait for the roundup. It should be a blast. Every trip down to SPI has been great and I'm sure this will be better.
Warm water and wind you can't ask for much more than that.
