backstall at the end of a unhooked kiteloop

Postby xmech » Tue Apr 14, 2009 12:52 am

so, i do the kiteloop and land it. then the kite sort of falls out of the sky, the best way I can describe it is backstall. Kinda like what happens at 1:45 of the naish house video. I am pretty sure the kite is tuned properly. what am I doing wrong?

I have two theories,
1) I am looping to low
2) I am looping to fast

I am using a havoc 09 10m. Any help would be greatly appreciated

loop it again so you don't go downwind faster than your kite. :D

well that happens from going downwind too much. and from making a really big kiteloop
you should try doing a tighter turn in your loop like in here:

and look at how he edges into it

also depower strap forgot that

maybe depower the kite a bit more and see what changes.

Normally a kite backstalls when the back lines are too short...

Exactly - many SLE kites are very sensitive to oversheeting, so unhooked it is EXTREMELY important to have the depower strap pulled precisely right (usually A LOT), as it will backstall easy if you move towards the kite as in unhooked waveriding or a kiteloop landed with speed in direction of the kite.
And if pulled too much - you dont have any power left, so it gotta be just right

yup, pretty much every SLE will backstall just like you described. You have two options.

1. pull more depower strap so the kite isn't oversheeted and rises a bit more after the loop
2. hook back in right after you do the kiteloop so you can sheet out and let the kite rise.

if you're doing your loops in light wind on a big kite, it's harder because the kite is heavier and doesn't loop as fast. you won't have this problem on an 8m in higher wind.

I can unhook and send it without any backstall, but I'll be sure to try more depower next time i am out.

Unhooking without backstall is not nearly sufficient :-?

When you loop the kite through the window - the angle of attack to the wind increases rapidly... The kite will increase the speed, in order to keep the angle "low" (high angle = stall).
This is what we like about kiteloops - the BURST of speed and power :D
For this to happen, the kite need a certain "wind speed" hitting the kite, otherwise it will definitely stall :o

So if you are approaching the kite during/after the jump, it will have so low speed compared to the wind, that it will stall very easy.

You can just set ANY kite up at 12 in really light wind - pull the bar, and walk towards the kite, and see how it stalls, if in doubt how it works.

So thats why you have to depower the kite more for unhooked kiteloops, than for raileys and jumps and HP's 8)

Dont know if that makes sense/explains ?

Kindly, Peter Frank

Just a quick question about huge kiteloops. When is a safe distance up from the water to try. I know that there is a dead zone that doesn't allow time for the kite to catch you. Where is this zone?

Only do it on a very small kite, 5-9meters (9 would be TOPS)
Jump up as high as humanly possible and pull the trigger hard before you
reach your max height. Push your bar out while you swing your kite around to catch you
