united airlines(Maui) charged $175 for legal size/weight bag

Postby jteabird » Tue Sep 01, 2009 10:40 pm

United airlines Maui location charged me $175 for a legal size and legal weight bag... this Maui agent searched my bag and because there was a kiteboard in the bag charged me $175.. serious this dude made me take my kites out so he could see if there was a kiteboard hidden underneath.. I just e-mailed the company so I hope this was just a high strung agent and I get a refund..

Tell them that kiters are a a group of people with high disposable income..we buy gear worth a lot of money, and that we travel a lot. In addition that United's actions and policies will affect to what extent kiters will use their services.

You can see in their policies that they mention wakeboards, and not kiteboards, but there is no reason to charge since your board was within the normal baggage req. (btw. are you sure about that?)

They also mention that waterskiing gear is free as long as you are within their baggage fees.

This crap is pissing me off. Why not have ONE (1) policy that deals with baggage size. That is it. Everyone is held to the same standard. It would be easier for them to manage, and surely they will not have as many frustrated customers...

Let them know though that their decision will affect your and other kiters long term relationship with the company.

Yea this sucks but how big is your board?
The max size for a bag is 158 linear cm, that would be a really small board especially if you had kites with it.
I know my golf bag is WAY over the limit, sometimes you get luck and other times you get screwed.

I got hit even harder, $250 in Maui.
The jerk claimed I had sails in my bag,
didn't even mention anything about a board.
I kept arguing that I didn't have sails.
He kept calling me a liar.
They kinda hold your gear hostage, and you can't do anything about it.
Except never fly with them again.

Hope if the rumor about United going under is true.
And if Continental takes over, I hope it works in our favor.

Yea what size board do you have that you can fit it with kites and still be under the tottal COMBINED linear length requirement? The size restriction is the length + width + height.

Doesn't continental have like 2 or 3 routes that are good out west or something?
In the rest of the world they are the worst airline ever,
and I will always pay an extra $100 to not be on one of their flying sewer pipes.
United on the other hand, is good. except for this BS

Why are we being picked on???? We pay our money like anyone else and our kite gear is not really a big issue at all. Compared to golf we are about the same or a little less trouble I think for a TT at least.
Maui flights are always where the shit hits the fan. I have been dinged several times badly when I was windsurfing.
If you go somewhere where kiting is less known then it is not as much of an issue at all. Maybe stay away from Maui.........

I came back from Maui on July 31st this year with United
1 board (133cm) plus 1 kite in a bag (the other kite was in my suitcase)
They also wanted to charge me $ 175 just because of the board

We argued for 10 minutes, but I had a printed copy of United's luggage policy which shows snowboards travelling for free. I finally managed to convince the employee and paid nothing.
