List of usable kitecams ! (?)

Postby Peter_Frank » Fri Jan 08, 2010 4:16 pm

I will make a thread of its own for this now.

We are many who uses cameras in the kite, or kitelines, or helmet, or board.

For these to be usable, there are a few requirements needed, which narrows the fleet to a few it seems.
But which cameras ARE these few ?
I am not really asking about how good/bad they are, as this is easy to find around on the internet, or in other threads on kiteforum.

But let us all contribute with our camera knowledge so we can make a list of those that can be used.

1. It has to be watertight, or have a reasonably low cost camera housing.

2. It has to have auto-picture (or interval picture), so it can take high resolution pictures (at least higher than video) with some time interval, and continue automatically with this.

(3.) It has to be able to shoot video (but everyone can, just in different formats).

The size and specifications and pricing can we find ourselves easy (although, fine if you got some basic info), but which cameras can meet above 2-3 points ?

I know of two:

1. Go Pro xx (HD and Standard)
2. Pentax Optio Wxx (W30, W60, W80)

But there MUST be others ?

If we can make this list, it will save SO many kitesurfers a huge amount of time, as it will be much easier to check up on those and choose the one that suits you and available.

Otherwise you will end up in the huge confusing market if you go to a photo shop or net shop.
Even the sales clerks in the store can usually NOT tell about whether a camera has interval shooting or not :(

So lets use the forum to make this list and help everyone, and ourselves :thumb:

Kindly, Peter Frank

Actually, I am almost sure that NONE of those camera works (except for the Pentax'es of course) !

At least Olympus 6000 and 8000 and the Canon Powershot dont, thats for sure :(

I've checked very thoroughly on these ones both physical (and in the manuals first), as they were some of the obvious choices and available here at the shop when I was buying for a kite trip - and none of above cameras has the feature we want, #2 autopicture :-?

So thats exactly why it would be great if we could help each other by stating which watertight cams exist, with high resolution autopicture :thumb:
The two features needed - everything else is details and up to the individual what is preferred 8)

It is evident which cameras are (stated at least) watertight or with small water casings, and can be seen in the specifications right away usually.

But the feature that the camera can take pictures by itself, with a defined interval, is VERY difficult to find it seems

I dont believe the Pentax and Go Pro are the only ones - or maybe they are ?

So the list is still short with only 2 options till now :

- Go Pro xx (HD and Standard)
- Pentax Optio Wxx (W30, W60, W80)

I agree,
but if you're willing to compromise to give up the interval feature a good one will be out.
It's the Kodak PlaySport HD Waterproof Pocket Video Camera will be $149.00.
Comes with an editing package:

Hey,

I think Wetstuff did a review on the HD video cams in a thread a while back. Maybe he has some input or could re-post the review here. It may not be what you are looking for and it may be outdated. If I find it I will post a link and maybe he could put together another one.

Hej Steen

It looks like a really cool and price "optimized" videocam :thumb:

But I(we as kitesurfers) am looking for a camera, not too big of course.

And besides being way too big, I can not see it has the autopicture function, which is the most essential feature of the two primary features - even more essential than being watertight I would say...

Maybe there ARE only the two options we can use, Pentax and Go Pro, as noone has answered here, nor in another sub-thread ?

I was hoping to get more choices, but not yet :(
