Got a hernia kiting over a month ago and just went to the doctors for them to tell me that i need surgery, and am just woundering if anyone knows how soon after the surgery i can kite? I'm trying to plan some trips and this obviously affects the dates haha. Also if anyone knows of how possible it is for reoccurance with this type of physical activity, then that would be great.

Hopefully, they will do both sides, if not ask them to look again and find one on the other side that will also be fixed (strengthened probably with a mesh fabric) at the same time. That way you will not be going in for surgery a few years later with the same problem on the other side.

I would think you could resume your normal activities as soon as you feel up to it, but there are different ways to do the surgery and maybe some of them need time to heal. For example, will this be done with the open method or with the laparoscopy, or another way. With mine, I was ready to do anything in about a week to 10 days. There's a dedicated hospital in Canada that I hear has their patients walking up and down the stairwell after surgery or maybe the next day. I know someone that had two done, the first by laparoscopy and the second by open, and they are convinced the healing and pain was better with the open method which isn't what I would have expected. With the lap, I think they pump in gas to make room to operate and maybe that causes more discomfort after surgery. The first 2 days after surgery will be the worst and it will feel like someone jumped up and down on your stomach.

Here's what was the general conclusion form the site mentioned in the
previous post:

Although laparoscopic repair is associated with a small reduction in pain and it gets your patient back to work a day sooner, it carries a greater risk of serious complications and recurrence.

I was back to kiting 8 weeks after getting an open hernia surgery November of '08. Everything felt fine and the
wound was closed and OK to go in the water with. I had some concerns about the possible
complications with laparoscopic surgery. Mainly with nerve damage, which can result if a staple hits
a nerve.

Good luck.

Mainly your waiting for the incision to heal, the hernia repair is a strong as its going to be at the time of the repair, waiting does not make a difference. Had one side done, repaired..other side blew out the next year. Both surgeries were by the same surgeon, lot of pain with the first, none with the second, in fact I came home drank beer and enjoyed the rest of the day. I was running 2 days after each surgery. 6 weeks is what they say for normal activitys, but wt lifters would be lifting the next day, but they are not in water.

... me too. I've had both repaired - need the LH done again. It's been pending for about 4 months, but I am too busy. Just do not eat a lot of wheat or other gassy foods.

I disagree with the above statement. When you have mesh implanted to fix your
hernia (laparoscopically or via open method) it takes time for the mesh to fuse to the surrounding
tissue. So while it may be true that you can do light activities within days of the surgery, you
should avoid lifting for a month or two. Anyway, there is plenty of good data on this on the internet.
Just make sure the surgeon you pick has done at least a 100 of the type of surgery you go with.
