Padre Island National Seashore (the national park) is apparently banned to kiters. I talked to the owner of the windsurf place on the corpus end of the madre and he said the ban had something to do with the kites being a threat to certain types of birds (I think he said birds of prey). This ban includes the water (or some of it) on the madre side of the national seashore. I don't know if the gulf side is banned. Sorry for the bad news. I wouldn't mess with it either. Somebody on here who kited before the ban can probably spell the real reasons for the ban. I have just been told the cover story of why it was banned. Ride the madre at first, then land at the national park limit and switch over to the gulf side. Again, I don't know if the gulf side is banned. If you ride the madre all the way, there will be a bunch of phone calls by people whose feelings are hurt when they see your cool kite in their windsurfing exclusive area.

that is an insanely long way. are you sure you don't just want to do downwinders just from the south to north end of the city? then you drive back and do it again. and at the end of the day a cold beer and hot shower and maybe a girl is waiting.
there is nothing between spi and corpus. you will be alone. there will be no windsurfers or anybody to care or complain. i assume you'll do it on the gulf side as i'm not sure what the point would be of a flat water down winder. so the gulf side is not banned anywhere. for the corpus laguna, the banned area is quite small. this will be just the last mile of 200 miles so i wouldn't let that stop you. and bird watchers are not such aggressive people so I think the consequences will be minimal even if they complain

By the way it is not 200 miles, but approx. 106 miles (from Google Earth). It's a long distance, but on the laguna Madre, with a good setup,it wouldn't be such a foolish thing...

I had a bird person stop traffic on the JFK causeway to stop, get out of her car and start jumping up and down to yell at me how what I was doing was illegal and that I was trampelling baby bird eggs. It was quite a sight to behold.

ok guys - I can admit when I'm wrong - While the drive is about 180 miles, by water it's much less. And bird watchers are lunatics!
but I'll stand by my preference for ending a downwinder with a cold beer and hot tub

Hi everybody....finaly got to login. Thanks Toby!
I'm the one that want to make the downwind. I'm planning to do it in one day. The reason why i'm using the Laguna is to get down as far and as quick as possible. Flatter the faster!
It's kind of a record day challenge....trying, beating my last record. And of course as a speed lover, I should have a lot of fun and time for speedruns on the way down...
There is approx. 100miles from the North flats in SPI to the JFK bridge. I have no intention of hurting anyone feelings. If necessary, I'll be stopping before Birds Island. I don't think it is possible to past by under the bridge anyway....right?
I was told there is plenty of water to get by all the way from side to side. Can some body confirm this? Any fisherman would know better....
Of course,I will need a flat boat as escort for security(and less cost), like the fisherman have, to be able to get by almost everywhere.
Logistic is to be arranged still. Any help would be well appreciate. If someone else want to come along...I'll be glad. That will help to reduce the cost of the adventure!
Thanks!
PS: excuse my lack of language....
