Jan, Feb are tough in Hatteras. You might be lucky to ride with 1 or two. I got a nuclear 30 knot SW day that blew in 60 degrees and there was 10 in the slick for around an hour then down to 5. On the other days blowing NW 25 knots 30 degrees. I was ridddin solo.. I am ridin solo!

The sound freezes! Its very shallow and is the same as the air temp usually. It warms and cools very fast. This time of year the ocean is the best, it very warm compared to New York waters. Also I am not a local, so I was on my own. I stopped at some of the shops and those were the guys who were out riding.

Anyway GL. Bundle up and its miles and miles of open empty waters.

For the most part, the most consistent winds in North Carolina are in the spring and fall. Summer months can be really humid and still air with lots of mutant mosquitoes. Winter months bring a lot of 5-15mph NW winds with bluebird days. You can definitely get a hard SW in the summer, or a 25mph NW wind too, but the strong winds just don't seem to be as consistent as other seasons.

Also, Spring Noreasters and Fall Hurricanes can bring some sick waves!!

Chiming in, yes, the spring and fall are great and consistent.
Little iffy in Jan/Feb, but if you can tolerate the cold, good chance you'll score a session or two. Odds go up as you get into March-May
Locals are the ones riding in the winter, and they are great folks...haven't come across any a-holes.
Actually, haven't come across many of those bad types at any time on the island.
Have fun!

It's freakin cold here right now. The water in the Pamlico sound is hovering around 40-45 degrees so the air is about the same. The wind has not blown south too many times lately to warm things up and when it blows North...ouch. You can't keep your fingers warm without thick gloves.
I know it's much colder in other places and guys are still out there but the conditions here are more suitable for other winter sports right now.
It's no problem when it's just a little warmer but it's a cold winter on the east coast and February is predicted to be more of the same.
Spring and Fall are different stories as stated previously in this thread.

Good luck

Warm water, good wind, good waves and it's not a tourist nut house.

The End.
