What is not allowed of kitegear as handluggage, fins, bars?

Postby bojsen » Wed Jan 26, 2011 6:58 pm

Hey

I have packed my travel surfbag and it is getting close the weight limit (32kg) :o . Im thinking of taking bars/trapez and surffins into the handluggage in order to save the weigt, but have you experienced that fins were forbidden at security check. You know sharps fins, bars with lines...terror ects ...security might have a vivid fantasy. :-?
I dont want to get screwed at security when I have already checked my travelbag.

Plz post your experience...fails as well as success.

Thanks

I was hoping to carry-on my bar and lines recently (Ireland to US flight) and denied at security.

I was lucky the security guy was super nice and escorted me to special baggage so I could check it in and not have to abandon the bar. If it had been busier at the security check I would have been out of luck.

I'm not sure about the fins. You better check with someone if you don't want to risk forfeiting them. Not worth taking a chance.

bon voyage

Allready took my fins twice as hand luggage and never had any problems with them.
It was from spain to Belgium and vice versa.

Maybe tighter security checks when flying intercontinental?

No friends coming along to share the weight?

Enjoy your trip.

I am flying with BA from Dk over Heathrow to Cape Town, so it might probably be a bad idea to test the security...especially atm.

We are some people going there, but we are all more or less max'ed out on the scale :lol:

Gotta wear boardies alltime, no space for nice clothes. :girl:

Was thinking about the trapez....cant see why that should be a threat to safety onboard. :-?

I've brought bars many times from Canada to Maui, to Spain, to Mexico, to Cuba and back.
Only once was I given a hard time when the security guy called his supervisor to discuss (I guess) what bad things I could do with a bar and all that line. He finally let me through.

Come on.

In today's hyper security, terrorist prone world, this is so basic.

Bars = hammers or baseball bats.

Lines = lines for chocking.

Fins = sharp blades.

If it were me, I sure would NOT show up at an airport with a hammer and knife. But, that's just me.

Last week I returned from the UK with a go pro bike pump as hand luggage. No issues from security even though its steel and extend to over a metre. The whole airport security is a bit of a joke given I can buy a glass bottle filled with highly flammable liquid in the shops after security.

Anyhow the one thing you might want to be carefull about is the 32KG. Not sure state side but in a lot of places in Europe the max allowance per bag is no more than 20Kg due to health and safety. If you have a 32 KG allowance you may have to split it over 2 bags.

Lastly if you are trying to safe weight, you might want to look at the heaviest bits of your kit. Wet suit for example, I can't imagine 4 fins is going to make you any significant gain.
