Hi

I am going to be in Madagascar in July. Where are the top places to kitesurf there?

I have heard that Antisiranana is the place to go. Looking at a resort named Babaomby. Anyone familiar with it? How is the kiting there?

Babaomby is effectivelly nearby ( some hours of local boat ) Antsiranana (called also DiegoSuarez in french name). This place is GREAT from May to November, so in July it is a kite paradize only.
In July, you can also go in the south of Madagascar, nearby Tolianaro ( called also Tulear in frech name), there you ave plenty and hundred of kilometers of spot, wild and 100% nature. There is a guy organizing kitesurf, surf, windsurf adventure from his catamaran. You don't need to pay hotel or wathever, everything included with a gooddeal if you compare with a hotel, transportation to the spot, and also you will not kite alone.

Hi there - sorry for the slow reply on this. I went to Madagascar in November. It's an amazing place. I went up to the north - and spent time at Sakalava Bay and Babaomby. It was the windiest conditions I've kited in so it took me a bit of getting used to. But the spots are incredible.

Babaomby is definitely the best place to kite in Mada. I've been there in May 09 and loved it. Then I travelled all the way to Tulear in the SW by local mini-bus (for the fun of it, 2500kms). If you have a 4wd or know someone with a motor boat, this might be an option, but overall I did not like the place that much. Wind was gusty, not so strong, shallow reef (high tide riding only) and desperatly flat (I ride in waves).
Babomby is isolated, on the Esmerald Sea, eventhough located one hour from Diego Suarez (Antsiranana in local language). You get an immense lagoon where you can at any tide and a great wave spot after a 5-10mn ride from the lodge.

Agree with tripman - Babaomby is an incredible place to stay and kite. The Emerald Sea is this crazy Green colour and you stay in these permanent tents looking out over the water. The setup is really cool with like a communal area for eating and drinking - and the food is great. You have to take a boat ride to get there which gives it an away-from -it-all kind of feel.

Is it possible to do Madagascar on a tight budget? Babaomby looks amazing but €85 per night is out of my range, especially as i want to go for 2 months.

Are there any long-stay budget options?

Sakalava Bay is a cheaper option. There are two places to stay there - Sakalava Lodge and Royal Sakalava which seemed the best bet when I was there. Both are right on the beach and the spot there is incredible as mentioned above and nice and unspoiled - you can also arrange for a fishing boat to take you on trips to the Emerald Sea.

Some of the French guys I met were staying in Ramena which was even cheaper. They seemed to be there on longer term visits. It meant they had to take transport- taxi/motorbike- to reach the spot at Sakalava each day but the accommodation sounded really cheap.

Hi all,

For a kitetrip in Madagascar, Sakalava Bay, not far from Diego Suarez, is the absolute perfection. The kitespot is gathering flat water and waves.
The scenery is terrific. We have a brand new hotel called "kiteparadise madagascar".

Set up in the middle of the beach, on the top of the dune and the rooms just in front of the lagoon are absolutely amazing.
Cherry on the cake our staff is adorable.

PS: Another good idea is to do the three bays trip from the hotel.
