6m viron or unity for waves ?

Postby Guvner » Sat Apr 30, 2011 11:54 am

just wondering whether someone (gunner) could contrast the 6m unity and 6m viron. Which has more depower and other characteristics ?. Im starting to think i might want a foil as a small wave kite.
For a small wave kite i like something with pivotal turning and a bit slower through the windwindow. Also when you pull the bar in hard enough does either kites wingtip compress and brake like a foil on handles as this can be nice in the waves ?

No comparison but just a test of the viron 4m (bought for my child ) that i made in big waves on big wave hydrofoil : not really adapted. In details :
Pros :
-very secure,
- good depower when you let the bar go,
- not too mobile which can be a good point in high winds
- very good drift
- stability is just ok, but not wonderful above 30 knots
- good recovery when kite is instable

Cons :
-really hard to make it turn when not sheet-in from the bar
- hard bar pressure (so the combination of both gives a too physical effort for a long ride),
- depower is on/off so hard to use the kite to keep a good balance in gusts and "unordered waves"
- sit too deep in the wind window (upwind is very bad, body drag is a pain to recover the board when laid on its side)
- windrange is disapointing : bad low end , medium high end
- launching the kite is a pain ecen with a helper.

It was the first time i ever foiled in such hard conditions. Overall it was a fight and the viron is not the good weapon for that. More agility when depowered and more LD ratio is necessary in these winds even on a hydrofoil. Kites like Conceptai Wave should do far better IMO. Since it is not Viron original purpose, we cannot blame it and it however allowed me to spend good time with deep souvenir, still in a safe manner.

I had a couple unitys 8m and 10 deluxe for traveling to wave spots and didn't find them very good , very inconsistant power . I had a pulse 2 8m and lovesd it but not much depower so I sold it and got the unitys which was a mistake. I kept the 10 unity deluxe to use on the foil board but I hated it.

I agree the Unity was shit. Got one for the GF to learn on which it did OK for but the bridal was a mess, the power it produced was sad, and the hang time was a joke. I had high hopes for drifting but there were too many problems. But hey, it didn't invert.
