How much profit does a kite shop make? Who makes what?

Postby kitejunkie » Mon Jun 20, 2011 4:49 pm

Anyone know the economics/costs/profit of a kite?

What does a kite company pay the manufacture for a kite?

What does the distributor pay the kite company for a kite? What percent of kite companies use a distributor vs. strait to the retail shop?

What does the retail shop pay for a kite?

Maybe use a $1000 retail price for an example to keep it simple.

This topic should be deleted for the simple sake of retail establishment owners having a right to hold margin. There is a distinct separation of information between the consumer and the producer for a reason. This is a 3 hour long idiot proof version of every thing you need to know. http://www.zeitgeistmovingforward.com/

When you are done watching it, go to your local shop and make a purchase :)

I agree with Ryan..........everything out there IS NOT for public knowledge.

I work in the marine industry and customers coming right out and asking what my cost is pisses me off. I can understand the curiosity, but I don't go up and ask the plumber what his cost is for fittings or the doctor how much medicine actually costs.

I'm not jumping in your shit kitejunkie, but COST should be reserved for reps and dealers.

just go to the http://www.switchkites.com website, remove the cost of shipping to your country and that should give you a pretty accurate idea of what kites cost retail shops.

I came across a piece of paper from china kites showing the cost of each kite made and the average cost was around 100 dollars per kite. Attack me if you want but its the truth. :o
I try to always buy something from a kiteshop when I am in one. Its very nice to have a store that you can enter and try on things to make sure its right for you. Support your kite shops it would suck to only be able to get things on the internet.

I call bullsh@t on that $100 figure. Its closer to double or triple that. As a long time kite repair person, and former Wipika employee, I know about cost of materials and the labor required.

If they were made in the States, we'd be paying $3000+ for kites.

How about what happens if the product doesn't move? Discounted beyond cost?

So... what are the losses and how it affects employee wages, the shop's lease, utilities (heat & hydro), insurance, etc ...
It doesn't take much effort to break down a percentage of where the profits might go. Is any profit even made or are they in it for the love of the sport? Breaking even most days and not others?

Just another angle ...

lol funny joke. $100. You know what a kite is made of, dyneema sk-75 lines, T9600 polyester fabric, type 316 steel fittings, the raw cost of building a kite yourself just from the raw materials is around $800 , unless you think you can get away with cotton sheets for your kite fabric, nylon rope for your lines, and a coat hanger for your spreader bar.

That price was for kite only! I didn't believe it either until I saw who the accidental fax was from. Believe what you want. Time to pump!
