Bille
I totally agree. In the USA the pilots would be violating FARs against putting bystanders at risk on the ground, not sure what the equivalent is in Australia. Billie what would you guess the cost of the repairs will be to the hang glider? Wouldn't be surprised if he bent and or broke most of the tubular aluminum, broke battens, tore a good deal of the faring fabric and messed up some cables and attachments. Looked like a pretty high end glider. Add in the cost of his vario and radio if he was using them. All in all a pretty expensive lesson assuming he came out uninjured which would only add to it.

Reality check time at 4 mile, putting others at risk through pilot overconfidence in poor practices is not only stupid, it is wrong.

And That would be a Good assumption !
Hardly any HG pilots can fly without a vario these days. (sigh)
So Yea, it probably went in the drink also.

I posted this on OZ forum, & the first response i got was a pilot that tried to convince
me that the landing was too difficult to attempt to land elsewhere.
I Deleted my first response to her, (it was Rude), & then Told them how to execute a
landing like this and still live through it :

I thought that would be the case - the pilot who replied didn't want to share the beach ... which leads me to imagine that they were probably landing there to stamp their authority over the kiters - "We were here first" etc etc.

Waiting for "someone" to chime in with their heirachy of beach use arguments :nono:

I think you missed the point of my previous post on the subject.

The hang glider that hit tie kite lines---
it has a glide ratio of about 12 to 1,(( it goes forward at least 12ft for every 1ft it falls))

If you look at the beach that is viewed at the beginning of the video-- it's nearly Empty !!
I did miss the point....AND I learned something. So I guess being educated about a topic actually count for something :thumb: :thumb:

Thanks for the lesson.

I really think it is a pity if this is the way the hang gliders tries to hold on to a piece of beach. Actually it is a piss poor way of doing it looking at the results. Hope someone with knowledge about the situation can chime in.

Who was filming?

My guess is:

- hang glider was trying to land short of the kites (like the other guys)

- hang glider did not think to glide his landing out further down the beach because hang gliders are heavy, and he was freaked out by the conditions and the kiters and everything. He may have misjudged everything. Certainly there was plenty of beach length behind him. Maybe not enough beach length in front. It looks a bit like he was trying to turn back which is going to end in tears at that height.)

- hang glider pilot overshot his landing spot because there would be lift from the wind off the trees, and because he's not as good as Bille (who was number 4 acro pilot in the world and 2500 professional tandem flights so far better than most pilots in the world  )

- kiteboarder probably did not even see hang glider. (Who looks up to check for hazards?)

- even if kiteboarder did see hang glider then it may not have occurred to him that there was a problem (a. because he knows nothing about hang gliders and b. kiters don't even do this for other kiters.)

(BTW hang gliders are the windsurfers of the free flying world. Mostly old guys. Mostly a bit grumpy that everybody else have taken their position as cool extreme sports dudes.)

Before moving to Brazil, this was my home kite beach.
A little note to the situation on that day- the beach is normally much wider, but on the day of the incident, the tide was very high and there was very limited space available.
Maybe the hanggliders should check the tide table in the future...

Cheers

unbelievable...why would you want right where the kiters are? Is it the widest part of the beach?

Sorry, irresponsible behavior by the hanglider pilot in my opinion!

As the name tells, the beach is 4 miles long (approximately).
That spot there has access to a public car park with toilets, water taps etc.
That's why everybody tries to stay as close as possible to that area.
Wind is also a factor. There is not much turbulence while other places along that beach has "dead spots".
The wind direction for landing hanggliders there is good too.
