Outside Storage Bin for Kites

Postby ITN » Mon Oct 24, 2011 12:25 am

Ok. So the girlfriend has moved in and my kites have become second class citizens and have been deemed to take up too much space. I live in a very small apartment with a terrace so was thinking of getting one of those outdoor storage bins people use for patio cushions.

Anyone got experience with those things?

Worried they might not be overly waterproof and also a bit worried about the freeze factor over winter since I live in New York. Can a kite be damaged by extreme cold? Obviously I'll make sure they are dry before storing them.

Any other ideas? apart from not living with the girlfriend to begin with....

thanks guys

I have no experience with the cold and those things, I would expect it not being good for the kites to go beyond freezing everyday, but otherwise they work well.

Check out the tall upright ones, you can easily fit boards in there too...or maybe just move your GF out on the terrace?

Those Kites will treat Ya Good for Much longer than Most girl-friends !
YEA but ..
Life kinda Sucks without a Girl-friend.

So Dude; don't kick ether of them out; just make some
shelves up really high & out of the way. Make a classy looking
cove, to hide them well.

Wait --There's More ..

You'll Need to give the girl-friend a bath & brush her hair
a few times a week; to help her forget about the extra closet
space that could be housing more of her shoes !

LOL at Billy!

If you put them outside, I'd make sure the storage is sealed against bugs too - ants and bladders aren't a good mix, I hear.

My kites all live in the garage, non climate controlled, year round, I have never had any freeze damage issues beyond my non-plasticized control bar chicken rope's lfe being diminished from being wet and frozen, maybe.
I have NEVER EVER had any valves slipping off and the kites are all slingshot and Naish and Likker Fartz and a flysurfer, and incedentally a pile of ozone land foils and other 4 and 2 line smaller kites n'foils. i think kites are okay in cold temps.

You wouldn't keep your girlfriend in an outside storage bin (would you?) so why would you keep your kites there?

I use an old bulky fiberglass cartop carrier set on a shelf in my garage, well proven against wind ,rain, and rodents. Any thing you get for outside I think I would put on stilts or really course gravel to discourage creapy crawlies and little furry criters.

Just make sure everything is dry before you put it in the container or you'll get mold & mildew on your kites. I find even the salt doesn't totally prevent this as condensation moisture comes on from other sources (not just salt water you may kite in).

While I wouldn't worry about the outdoor storage, a small closed outdoor container is a little different than a garage due to the lack of airflow. Can you get a full standup rubbermaid tool shed? They make mini ones that fit nice on patios. One like THIS could be better as you can leave the doors open until everything dries out, and then close it up to protect from weather or lock it. They pop up on Craigslist on occasion, so you could get one cheap.

Barring that, yeah, I'd also look for some high storage you could make in the house.
