how long rib injury?

Postby AndrewJMcGee » Fri Dec 16, 2011 2:58 pm

I just smashed myself really good yesterday. I feel like i have broken ribs, xray said no. I still feel stuff rubbing, and moving inside. If i dont move much, it doesnt hurt. As soon as i turn a certain way i feel something in there. Cartalige? Am i fuccced? Trick was a kiteloop to epic fail!

normal with a kiteloop...

You have torn the rip I guess...takes longer to heal than a broken rip!
Like 6 weeks...I had the same...

Good luck!

i am a month removed from a similar injury. take a couple weeks off then switch to a diaper harness. I have been out three times since the injury and have toned my riding down a bit but am still able to ride and do everything but unhook.

If you really want to heel up, take it easy for 4 to 6 weeks. If your pain comes from a result of crunching your abs then wrap your chest so you cant crunch down. For me putting my shoes on and sneezing are a bitch.

Thanks folks! 4-6 is what i figured. I was just starting to feel it. Here is the clip.. watch as i fail to keep my body straight. Then i fail to pull the correct bar, once i am backward. Then i get body slammed, and was fuzzy and blurry for a sec till i got my self together. Notice i pull left bar, and just before impact i realize wrong side, and pull right maybe saving my ribs from worse. Once i was backward time stopped.

Any advice?

I think correcting with the bar when you noticed that you were pulling the wrong side was not the right move to do here. I can see your kite is nearly horizontal and your body is in free fall towards the water at a high rate of speed. There is no physical way for the kite to catch you at this point. the kite is too far too the side, there's no possible way you can loop it up to the top before you crash. What you could have done is kick off the board and cannonball, but like you I probably would have smashed my ribs in this situation.

yes, the extra movement at the end kick your but...should have kept it over head...and if speed needed for the landing add a second loop.
yes, kick off the board and land with your butt!

It all depends honestly on the injury. I dislocated my floating rib and it took about 3-4 months for all the pain to go away. It is still dislocated you can see where it is sucked in still. Might take years for it to realign it's self.

Toby, not sure he could have taken that advice in this case, he was turned around facing away from the kite, so pulling the right line made it go left.

Notice the similarity's ...
taken from Knee injuries :
Suncoast Kiter wrote:...
Really getting the feel for it now so i then decide its time to get down to business. I launch into the jump and bust a nice 30ft jump then throw the loop
...
Both kiters got just a Little bit injured to where it may reduce there kiting time by a few weeks.
My response to the guy that hurt is knee was this :

Now that Ya know your actually "Mortal", you'll notice that the concentration level
will go up, "Way Up" !
And with that extra level, at least for me anyway, the awareness
seems better & i can project further into my moves. The Cool part about projecting a line
is that a possible Exit strategy'(s)-- is formulated, ((Before)) it's even needed !!
I Really see this on the Hang glider ; mostly because i have more to draw on from
that sport.

SO --AndrewJMcGee-- that quote : "Once i was backward time stopped".

That is Never gonna happen again ; if ya use the fear of screwing up to help
project with your situational awareness of where you'll be 1 to 2seconds in the future and
well before the move has even concluded.
Think of it like a snow-skier ; seeing three moguls further ahead of where he & his skies are turning Now ...

SO if You thought you were Good before, (which you are) ; I think you could be even Better at your
chosen sport, after you recover , Ya just start choosing Better lines in advance of your moves.
No more -sporadic- bursts of -Randomness- ; everything is now, "Well thought out", before attempting it !

Hasn't everyone smashed up their ribs? well the cartilage anyway. It sucks, you'll heal, but its never gonna be like it was.
