Standardising Strap Insert Spacing

Postby fdvj » Tue Jan 10, 2012 11:53 am

Why cant this happen? I have just had to reject 3 sets of very good pads because the inserts didnt match the holes. Come on its not that difficult you can do it with fins.

it is standard. it's 6 inches with M6 screws.

like any standard, some companies will choose to go against it (to prevent you from using aftermarket straps).

but, the standard is 6 inches....

Go with slingshot and they fit all straps and pads! Fast track wins. And I believe everyone is going to 6" since that matches most boards and is what they use on wakeboards.

Jepp, I bought (for the missus) a pair of LF Bliss pads/straps to use on her Mako 140, didn´t work. The STD pads/straps on the Mako is waaaayyyy to big for a girl feet size 36.

Either standardize inserts or the companies need to get serious making quality adjustable pads/straps as there are some real shockers out there.

Revisiting this old topic since I just got naish apex pad/strap (6") that would not fit my brunotti dimension 2012 (6.25")... :angryfire: :angryfire: :angryfire:
Is there a way to get the data for the insert spacing for the main brands ?

From experience:
Naish as of 2013 is 6"
Brunotti is 6.25 till 2013. Not sure in 2014 since they claim their boards are compatible with boots.
North has the track system, which is great :-)

What about the other?
Core?
Aboard?
Slingshot?
Cab?
LF?
Airush?

The info is almost impossible to find on the official websites...

North track system with my fave cab footpads - epic fail.

Naish depower strap - can i replace it easy(snapped)? no chance.. have had 2 depower straps attached to by bar for 3 weeks - too much of a drama to redo!

Replace naish line onto leader lines - fail...

Kitesurfing slowly turning into windsurfing 1992 - then it died...!

When I build a board with inserts, I space the inserts so that either 6 or 6.5 inch spaced pads will mount. If 6.5, just skip an insert, the next one lines up pretty well.
Not sure if the spacing works out to exactly 6.5, maybe it's off by a hair, the pads still fit.

Also favor pads with slots instead of holes, ends worry about both pad fitting and stance angle. Even lets you use the next hole over if you blow out an insert, break a screw etc., with minimal stance change. 8)

I just measured several boards that use standard footstraps and they all come in at between 6.25 and 6.5 inches. I also checked some windsurfers here and they are the same. (Current Naish boards take a Naish plate style footsrap so they are not quite standard.)

In my experience spacing below 6.25 inches gives too narrow a footstrap for larger size feet while wearing booties in the winter.

I also measured Naish and North kite surfboards and they have 6.4 and 7 inch spacing respectively (because you always want loose straps with a directional board).
