Tips to extend the life of Depower Lines?

Postby apctjb » Sun Jan 22, 2012 4:59 pm

Time to replace the depower lines on my bars...Again! :-?

Lucky if I get one season before the rope frays to the point of failure.

So before installing new lines I was wondering if there is any coatings that can be applied to the line to extend its useful lifetime.

My bars (Best Redline Performance) use two lengths of single strand 5mm Dyneema Amsteel line which go from chicken loop to depower straps and back. Some say apply surf wax, others say do not as it embeds sand in the line).

Any suggestions ???

I rub mine with a candle, or surf wax, whatever I have to hand. Makes my lines last alot longer :thumb:

I second that, a good old cheap candle and rub it on. My lines are 4yrs old and still no sign's of stress.

we've been here before.
( im not the dick that will tell you to get a different bar. i fly north and wainmans. completely different bars all together)
polish/ smooth the hole in the bar with dermal, sand paper etc.... manufactures don't always check the bottom edge of the hole .bow string wax is the best if you can get it. i used my zipper ease stick on my north bar which works well. first season i burned through my depower strap. after mods no sign of wear.
sand bar hole smooth, wax line and save your  :cash:
Run what you brung :D

I'd prefer to accept that the depower line is a consumable item. I like replacing the rope with a new one cause I like that it is back to being 100%. Surely the small cost and the tiny bit of time it takes you to change isn't going to inconvenience you too much.

My motorbike doesn't need an oil change until every 10,000 km, but I change the oil and filter every 3,000 km. I like knowing that everything is running at its best. I would do the same on my kite. This year however they've gone for a PU coating so I'll have to see how much I like that. I can go back to the standard rope if I like.

Buy a cam cleat, change the depower from below the bar to above the bar, then switch your depower line for whatever, for instance, stainless steel braided wire

hahah stainless braided lined!! thats a new one.

Ozone covered their depower ropes with a pu plastic tube. this works great as the rope its self doesn't wear at all. I haven't worn through the pu plastic tube yet. But i do have several bars and buy and sell at least one kite a year so the old more warn bar goes with the kite i'm selling.

I wrote an article about how to extend the life of your depower line for a Local shop I ride for called Air and Earth located in Charleston, SC. Check it out... http://catchsomeair.us/index.php?option ... &Itemid=88

I have been meaning to try Sailkote but it is so expensive.

Has anyone tried a Dry lube spray teflon with success, I saw some at work and was thinking about trying it:
