the polish kiter Janek Lisewski is missing. He wanted to cross from El Gouna towards Duba (Saudi Arabia, about 200 km). He did several crossings before. He is equipped with GPS and emercency devices. He sent an emergency signal.

I hope he is well!
BTW
I bought a GPS for some long downwinds.
Which are the equipment you'd say is essential for crossings and long multi-day downwind?

Hand-held submersible VHF radio. It has emergency channel on it & can transmit something like 10+ miles. You can call boats, Coastguard, etc. while in the water. I've had a Uniden Voyager for 3 years for kayak fishing & it's been great. I trust my life with it.

I bought a Garmin 78s and Uniden marine radios.
A rescue beacon like ACR Aqualink is very expensive (USD400), but a must buy for marine or outdoor heroes! I'll save some and buy it before an open sea crossing.
Pray he is found by the morning!

from what I know all boats have to return before it gets dark...sounds like they are waiting now for daylight to start the search.
Let's hope he made it somehow...since Egypt is not that warm right now, I hope he had at least a long wetsuit and the kite still infalted. But if he fell asleep, I am not sure if he would wake up again...
We hope!!!

so if he sent a signal ten minutes ago, we can assume he is alive?
Should be daylight now in Egypt...any help on the way?

maybe a dumb question, but Egypt winds are thermal winds, right? So if you go out on the ocean, the thermal winds will work there as well? Same as near to shore? Or is the whole area thermal, no matter how close you are to land?

Whilst I obviously hope that they find this kiter safe and well isn't it quite irresponsible for him to attempt that crossing (or any) without a safety boat and then just expect someone to come and rescue him when things go wrong as they appear to have done here?
