Always known it as a roll. Although my brother continues to call it a spin, sounds as bad as a flip.

interesting question..
you got corked - sideways or upside down/off axis (eg snowboarding)
flip - cartwheel style upside down (eg bmx, skateboarding)
spin - like spinning around lines upright - kiting/ wakeboarding eg flat 3 would be a spin i reckon
roll - ... not sure what snowboarders/wakeboarders of today would call a fs roll/ if they would call it that at all... kiteboarders for sure refer to spins as rolls though quite often

In my opinion,
Spin = turn around lines axis (vertical against water)
Roll = turn horizontal, pararel against water

It's a roll not a flip. Tantrum's and Bel Airs are flips. If the kite is at 12 its a spin.

TheJoe has it right
Axis of rotation is vertical for a spin, off axis for a roll and horizontal for a flip.
Kite lift will suspend you so you end up doing a spin. Keeping the kite locked at 45 you can do a roll, and not using kite lift at all is how you get a flip.
