The Marty Kiteloop story (and how to avoid it) safety

So I have been having a lot of great times since I was with Morph. I now run a school on Vancouver Island and have been kiting up a Storm. I spent last winter down in Western Australia chasing the wind and huge waves down there. I kited over 100 days last year and finished the year with some amazing session in Maui! I started a new Mexican adventure in the Baja this year. 3 weeks into my trip in La Ventana I had a little accident... well a little accident with big consequences :( I was helping some students out with some downloops and jumping. When the lesson was finished we all went for a ride together. It was blowing about 23-25 kn and I was on my 8m. I went for a kiteloop railie and came down pretty hot. My front foot popped out of my binding and the board caught the water. I kept going and my leg got tweaked pretty good. I knew right away that I broke it. There was no pain, but it did not feel right... Oh and it was flopping around like a wet noodle. I was riding a suicide leash and luckily the kite just sat at 3 O clock slowly pulling my back to shore from behind where my leash was attached. When I got to shore someone landed my kite... then I had to come in through the shorebreak :S It was surely the most painful thing I have ever experienced having my shattered leg thrown around like a red headed foster child in the waves. Help was there very soon they pulled me up out of the waves. Being in a small fishing village it was 2 hours before I got to the hospital and got any pain killers :S
I have crashed much harder more than 100 times. This was just a freak accident that you can't do much about :( I will be back on the water in 6 months or less and stoked to come check out the Yucatan again!

Ouch! hope you have a quick recovery!

Did the break happen from getting that leg getting twisted or just from impact of the board on the water? Were you in straps or boots?

Hi Marty,

Opps, but you are alive and kicking (well at least with the other leg for now). I wish you a quick recovery.
I went through the same and know too well how damn painful it is.

Wow, I wouldn't have thought breaking your femur would be an issue in kiting. I would think your knee or your hip would give out way before your femur breaks?

I guess not much you can do to avoid freak accidents. Maybe I'll just drink more milk.

Hope you're back on the water soon!

Sounds painful. Now I have not broken bones that severely but every time has been different from intense pain to meh I think ill walk home and go to the hospital in the morning.

Speedy recovery. Take it easy and remember to go easy the first few times back in the water.

Holy cow! Marty, good luck and a speedy recovery.

How can this be avoided, did I totally miss that on the thread?

ouch!
wishing you a speedy recovery!!!

Two ways to avoid it (well, shit can always happen!):
1. really tight bindings (boots) to not get out (recommended for wakestyle with harder landings)
2. really wide straps to get out quickly and have it rotating around the foot (recommended for anything else)

2 is my setup. had several crashes, one foot out and the other foot twisting inside the strap. This way the knee does not get twisted or anything else.
And yes, I always have grip in it.
See here how my front foot twists in it for grip:
