Sprained my ankle - need some advice

Postby WildDuke » Sun Feb 24, 2013 12:38 pm

On the 19th jan, I sprained my right ankle. It's the top part of the ankle on the front and the tendon on the inside of my foot. When it happened I felt a bit of pain in my ankle, but nothing too bad, so I kept on kiting for another 4 hours. (Ps. I landed two new tricks so I was really stoked). Anyway when I got home and had a shower my foot blew up and was really painful. It too 9 days just to be able to bear weight on it. Then it too another week start to hobble around. I started wearing a light brace but after seeing a Physiotherapist and begun walking around and doing my stretches and strengthening exercises. All going well I thought, and started thinking about my next kiting trip.

Then 2 nights ago, I went to sleep and woke up with an excruciating ankle that was swollen and I couldn't barely put weight on it. Today, was a little better, but I'm back on the crutches and the ibuprofen and ice to bring down the swelling.

Question? WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED?

Did I push it to much too quick? Did I respiran it?

What should I do now? I'm thinking of getting a moonboot, like the Aircast fp walking boot and isolating the ankle all together. I'm going to go and see another physiotherapist this week, but do any of you have any advice?

It feels like after the last month and a bit, I'm back to square 1! Aghhhh! I'm beginning to not want to kite again EVER!

Sucks dude :( I've a borked ankle I have to watch out for too...

Curious - you went to a physio but not a doctor for x-rays or MRI? Why?

Yep I have suffered from ankle pain from various tendons and ops etc for years.

Start of the season there it went again.

Here's what I did.

Took three anti inflammations, then two every 4 hours for three days, down to one every 4 hours for a day or two, then one per day for a week.

Each night and morning, one bucket full of ice and cold water, the other warm, not water with a kettle boiled next to it to keep topping up. 2minutes one side, 2 the other. 20 minutes in total, 10 each Side. Did that for two weeks alongside the treatment.

Wore a decent ankle brace every day for this two week period.

Got some orthodics, just the 59 buck ones from the chemist and some sandal/ thongs that have a heel etc built in. Didn't walk around d bare foot for two weeks.

Also have a ultrasound home thingy, 10 min on medium every night for these two weeks and one in the morning.

Fixed, then did 21 days kiting in a row...no probs.

Did flair up on the 22nd, cold, hot and ultrasound with ankle brace for a few days. Fixed.

Sounds insanely focussed but enough was enough.

Oh yeh, put a pillow under that ankle when you sleep. Helps to.

Ibuprofen is the miracle drug man, plus the other physical procedures all added up to no more ankle probs after years and years of putting up with it.

Good luck man.

Sorry to hear and I hope it is nothing serious.
There is only one correct advice- jump into the next plane to Cairns and go to the hospital to get it checked.

Cheers

Well, this might not be what you want to hear. The worst was sprain I had..I took out my ankle playing sports. It was 3 weeks before I could walk on it...It did not get better, but we were mid season so I basically continued to play on it. It was swollen for over 6 months, before I finally told the team, manager. The team doctor didn't even look at it sent me directly to surgery. When I sprained it it crushed small pieces of bone off. So it had small bits of bone set in the ankle and I needed surgery.

I don't really know what it is called, and I sometimes still have problems with the ankle 14 years later. If I had not done the surgery I would not have been able to use the foot at all.

Nothing but surgery would have helped. Me waiting took out a whole season because of all the other injuries I got from limping (knee, hip and back). So get the ankle checked out. You might have to do a MRI.

Go see a doctor. Might be worse than a sprain and the longer you wait the worse it could get in the long run.

Yeah, I'm in cairns now. Ill, see a doctor this week. I did actially go the hospital a couple of weeks ago and the physio at the hospital said that there was nothing broken. He did recommend a MRI but I will have to ask another doctor for a referral. Ill get that don't this week!

Thanks for sharing your recovery story! Why the cold and then warm water? What is that meant to do?

Sorry to hear about this, feel your pain. I wrote to Westozzy on something similar he had, see the thread 'Posterior Tibial Tendonitis', have a look at it, but basically you need to have someone skilled look at it and treat it.

My brother had something similar happen.. where he woke up screaming at night because tendons that were messed up in the foot cause pain in his knee and hamstring causing his leg to lock up. He's been putting off treatment for a while due to being busy, but your body starts to compensate for misalignments caused from untreated injuries putting pressure on other parts of your body. He had gone to the doctor who prescribed him hundreds of dollars in painkillers and was told to return in a month, did do an xray nothing broken. He calls me up at 3am gets my therapists contact, shows up there at 8am and is walking out like nothing happened by 10am. Never took any painkillers.

Yes the doctor a specialist though is always sound advice to. I did have bone spurs cut out on this ankle but that didn't stop the flair ups, just reduced the constant pain. Thing is I found the specialist either recommending more surgery or the old 'rest it'. While this is sound advice I figured I would do what I physically could at my end first and see what results I could produce before going down the road again. Also saw an podiatrist hence the special sandals and some strapping to determine if it was collapsed arches that contributed to the injuries.

I'd follow both sets of advice myself.

Hot and cold, gets blood moving in and out of the area. Reduces the salts and stuff precipitating out and being left behind.
