Question for Dan at North - dice 2014

Postby Adam-north » Fri Sep 20, 2013 5:26 pm

Hi there

I have bought a north dice 9m recently and I am using it with my trust bar 5 lines,

I have noticed that opposed to my evo 7 and neo 12 the dice has tension on the 5th line which I supose shouldn't be like that, there are others dices on the beach and I saw that flown on 4 lines the kite has a different formation ( looks more closed like a c kite) .

The question is Does the dice behaves differently on the quad and on the trust?

Thanks :D

Funny. I've always said that other than tuning a little bit for different relative line lengths based on the height of the "Y" there isn't much difference flying our 4 line kites on 4 or 5 lines. I've found that to be largely true for the Evo, Fuse, and Dyno. However, someone recently told me that the Dice does not fly as well on 5 lines. I was doubtful until a couple days ago when I flew a Dice 12m on 5 lines, and now I completely agree.
For me, the 5th line was slightly slack, so I don't think that the 5th line tension was screwing up the kite, but if you have tension on your 5th line then I'd say it's probably not doing anything good. For me, simply the height of the "Y" seemed to make the kite fly poorly. It was (counterintuitively) oversheeted, and I had to pull several inches of depower to get the tips to stop flaring, and even then the kite felt simultaneously oversheeted and undersheeted. It was a weird feeling. The kite flew OK, but I've been loving that kite on 4 lines and I definitely wasn't loving it on 5. Then again, the wind was a little weird that day, so I can't say for sure, but it definitely seems that the Dice much prefers being flown on our 4-line bar.
My recommendation would be to try to get a Quad bar, at least to test, but that you will probably end up wanting to buy one if you don't have one already.

Hi Guys,

Whilst i appreciate 5TH Line can be confusing when you have had little experience with it, i can tell you often it never works out of the box.

5th line often requires extending and reducing on many set ups.

This is usually simple and not only changes the chracteristics of the kite but also give you flexibility of changing how you want the kite to behave.

For me 5th line is a must because of the additional safety and tuning options.

I would suggeat playing around with tension but adding a tiney pig tail or knot to the nose line.

Problem solved easily.

I know this is a question for dan but I had better answer because I know.

We have flown these dice kites back to back, 5 different riders in the same conditions and I can say with 100 percent certainty, fly this kite on 4 lines, period. Simple.

I recently responed on a thread, about getting a North Dice down to the beach and being unable to pump it up due to not having the right adaptor.

It was pointed out to me that I could just use the hose. I tried again this weekend and it works really well. :thumb:

So I just wanted to apologise but could not find the thread to post it on :)

Great innovation

Regards

Paul

So, for the Dice kite, thrust bar 5th element doesnt bring something more than the quad ?

Bottom end much better on the quad (noticeably so), more grunt, more power, more direct feel..the one minor but noticeable. 5th line brings in the safety option of totally killing the kite when flagging out.
