Dakhla in December - Shorty or full wetsuit & kite sizes ?

Postby sebhorner » Sat Sep 21, 2013 8:28 am

Hi. Me and the girlfriend are hitting Dakhla for the first time early December. If we need wetsuits is a shorty enough ? Thoughts please....

Also, we're ll.5st and 9st respectively and share a quiver of North Rebels 7/9/12m. Does that sound right for that time of year ?

Hi what flights are you getting and where you travelling from. Looking for a cheap getaway in December or maybe Feb possibly looking at dakhla but looking on sky scanner I can’t see flights coming up from UK? Is this due to Covid or am I looking at the wrong airport? What’s the usual travel route to there from UK?

I've been there twice, both times in February. I wore a full 5/3 wetsuit both times. You might get away with a shortie but I think you'll be more comfortable in a full.

If you have a bigger kite I'd suggest bring it as you'll most likely get a few low wind days around that time of the year.

I've flown with Royal Air Maroc (https://www.royalairmaroc.com/int-en) each time. They have flights going in December.

I would recommend a long suit it’s not particularly warm.
Warm enough when it’s not windy but the wind is coming over the ocean and not particularly warm. Water is also below 20 degrees IIRC.

Regarding kite size: you are fully off season don’t get your hopes up to much.
Most likely well below 20kts.
Anything could happen but most likely you get either lucky or unlucky if you go a single week. Periods without any wind or wind seem to come in stretches of about 5 ish days.
Been there in October, November and February. Usually booked very last minute where the next week would show winds or just go 2 weeks for a good chance of kiting.

p.s. I also had 30+ knots from “the wrong direction” (wind normally pretty much always comes from the same direction) days off season so anything can happen but the odds for 25+ days are pretty darn low.

It's the North Atlantic in winter, water is cold, full length wetsuit.

Is u ok t warmer and windier by February?
Also has anyone flown to marekech and the. Flown to dakhla seems to be a massive price difference from the uk flying directly to dakhla from the UK than there is to marekech. Wonder if it’s cheaper to get an internal flight between the two after travelling to marekech.

Official season is April to Sept.
Those month you get proper winds, expect lots of 20+ knots days

Lowest months are Dec/Jan and the other months are something in between. Not super great still so will be a bit of a gamble.

Just a heads up:
Marocco just canceled all flights to a couple of countries due to Covid including UK.

Also be aware that last year they had a major lock down including Dakhla kite spots (no kiting allowed and you had to move to Dakhla city and basically be under house arrest).

It’s quite annoying that the government in Marocco doesn’t give a proper heads up a week or two in advance so you can actually get out easily/finish your holiday.

For me it’s a reason to look elsewhere for the moment.

Don't think the OPs 2013 trip will be affected by covid cancellations
