Garmin Virb

Postby shawn13 » Sun Oct 27, 2013 7:56 pm

I have been waiting for the Garmin Virb Elite to arrive but its still on back order so I picked up this instead. Garmin Fenix and Garmin Virb.

The Garmin Fenix GPS data can be used in connection with the Virb to show the overlays on the video (See Image: Heartrate, Speed, Elevation). Unfortunately the Elite does all this in one unit but still hasnt arrived :angryfire:

I will be testing these devices on a two week kite trip in the Caribbean starting next weekend. Ill post my results and videos when I get back. I plan to gather speed data will riding the raceboard as well as elevation data for jumps.

Toby, notice the Airstyle DVD under the Dell monitor...

UPDATE:

He is a video test to show the quality of the Virb

I sense sarcasm.

However, the virb and gopro 3+ have their own benefits. Go pro looks amazing when you need cool tones for picture contrast. Virb seems to do well with warm tones. Im not sure if it can be edited in the software.

Garmin has free software called Virb edit and its actually pretty sick. You could import Gopro footage into the software and overlay the gps data by editing the sync. I will be trying another action cam footage in comparison to see how well it collaborates.

Got to test the Virb for a couple of times since a friend is the local Garmin importer.
It has a lot of features over the Gopro but the best one is that there is no fogging :!:
It also seems very well built and although the pic quality is not 4K, HD is enough for me.

The virb comes with a universal adapter to fit most gopro mounts. I use it in a gopro suction mount.

So i tested the virb and fenix over a two week period. The functions are cool but there are some flaws.

The Fenix didn't give a completely accurate elevation, sometimes id be near 0m and in the same session it would read -15m. It also takes some syncing to match the watch data with the video which isn't completely accurate. When you jump the watch updates every second so depending on the update it may or may not record your heighest elevation.

I am going to test out the virb elite to see if the issues are fixed when everything is combined into one unit.

Here is a shot of the video and gps track in the Virb Edit software.
