Minimum water temp. How low do you go?

Postby KYLakeKiter » Sun Nov 24, 2013 11:41 pm

Well, unfortunately it is that time here in Tennessee that the water is getting too cold to kite for fun. I went out yesterday in 50 degree F (10 C) water and 43 degree F air temp. My 3/6 wetsuit worked fine, but feet and hands were pretty uncomfortable even in 5 mil boots and a couple of different types of gloves.

I think based on comfort and enjoyment, 50 degree water is about my limit. My guess is that I am in the middle here as some will think I am a total wimp, and some would not even get in 50 degree water.

Just curious how low others go, what you wear, and when you hit your "this ain't fun anymore" point?

32f water, air down to about 25f, below that every time you crash the water instantly freezes on you and it's like you're wearing a suit of ice. 4/3 wetsuit, but I add a wool/poly liner.

We were out last weekend the water temps of 44'F with air temps of 46'F in 25 knot winds. I wore a 4/3 switch wetsuit, 5mm OR boots, 3mm OR gloves and a 3mm OR hood.
The wind chill as it was made it hard to breath so we did short runs of 45 mins but I never really felt cold just found it hard to breathe and my exposed face was stingy...(wind chill sucks).
Provo in 5 days...
We also had 12-14" dump of snow last night, so that's fun....

Just to put it in perspective, the sheltered bays were frozen over when we arrived...lol

Hardcore enough? Nah... Just scratching the surface. I still haven put my dry suit on...

A few hardy souls were out today here in Massachusetts. 25 to 29f degrees , blowing 25 to 45 mph. Too cold for myself and most . I love kiting but not that much. Personally anything above 45f air temp is ridable for me. Water temp is fine here in the fall, its the spring that can be nasty cold. Shallow water and on/side shore is always nice.

We go on any day so long as its above freezing...anything below that increases the risk that the safety system will freeze up and not release..happened with SS...rather dumb...dry gloves are yummy.... :naughty:

That sounds pretty hard core to me. Do you have a board that lets you slide right out of the water and on to the ice? Just for those transition days

I am impressed by your heartiness up there in Michigan and Canada, but I am not sure if getting more gear to kite in lower temperatures is worth it to me. Seems that at some point it is less fun and more survival. I'm still impressed :thumb:

Conditions aren't too extreme here. 10 deg c water and 0 deg c wind chill is about the worst we get.

Do you also use a hoodie? hoodies make a big difference also.
