What is your experience riding directionals, and how long did it take for you to be able to ride and not walk up wind using the foil... Just trying to set my personal expectations into a reasonable box.

well. okay so i have about 1000 sessions on directionals.
i have been racing all the race boards since the start, this is probably what will help you most specially the last 3 years boards. if you mastered the latest race boards then the foil will take a couple days.

staying upwind is not the problem its actually getting downwind again that's the hard part. Best learning conditions are mid to high teens.
my learning curve was fast since i have lots of racing experience.

my wife just learned last week and to make things easy we took a learning foil to mexico.
day 1 cruising around on foil with board on the water mostly and some foiling
day 2 foiling and falling mostly trying best to stay downwind
day 3 foiling consistent and staying downwind no problem
day 4 jumped on the Spotz and never want to see the learning foil again. calls it unstable as soon as you gain a bit of speed. never tried a learning foil myself but get what she is talking about.

Its something you can actually master at your own pace. all i tell people are keep all your weight on your front foot and ride it around like a regular surfboard as long as you want to it will stay in the water.

YES, I have seen some really good kiters get completely humbled by it for a couple session but a couple days later they are ripping. when it clicks it clicks. but it comes at a cost. Helmet/impact vest for the first week.

Thanks so much for your honest response. It is quite daunting considering the money involved to take something that is currently so inaccessible to something which is enjoyable. I really enjoyed your wife's path, I'm sure my wife will master it before I can even fly.... Amazing what having a blank canvas to work from will do.
