booties / water shoes for kiteboard with pads and straps?

Postby kooshball » Fri Feb 07, 2014 9:30 pm

I need some protection from oyster beds and assorted nonsense lurking below the water but I want to have minimal interference with my board equipped with pads and straps.

The board is an Aggression Twintip if it matters.

Any suggestions on brand / make /model of booties or water shoes?

Having cut my feet on oysters and other hidden stuff, I gave up on worrying about "the feel" and tried different booties and water shoes. I also like to be sure footed while walking into the water across slippery rocks etc.

I found the typical neoprene "surf bootie" or a scuba derived bootie to be too soft and indirect feeling. I WILL use them for cold water ops but otherwise prefer a minimalist protection approach.

I found the Vibram Five Fingers WaterShoes to be almost perfect.

I also like the ZemGear Terra Ninja Men'sshoe, although they also have a water version now.

Have you had any issues with the strap on the vibram shoes getting in the way of the wakeboard straps?

Fcs split toe 2 mm or 3 mm. Sole is durable enough for oysters. Can still feel undrneat well and low profile / little splash back Split toe really gives great control

I don't have the shoes handy but I don't recall a strap. If there is one, I don't think it bothered me.

I think I am usingthese ones

Agreed on the split toes

Also, when it comes to the Vibram 5 Fingers, I would recommend finding somewhere to try them on to get the best fit.

I have had great luck with Fila Skeletoes. They slide into straps fine and even feel pretty natural strapless on my surfboard. The only downside is the toes debond from the neoprene after a few months of hard use, but I do abuse them significantly, so I am still happy with the durability.

I am guessing that you use the neoprene ones and not the ones with the strap on them?

Dude! :o :o
I can't begin to say how awesome that is!!! :mosh:

As far as the Vibrams or Skeletoes go, do they have any insulating properties, or just strictly foot protection? I hate riding with booties, as I don't like the loss of feeling with the board. However, this particular winter has made the water cold even here in Florida and I'm open to suggestion.
