The best Kite for heavy riders?

Postby Burn45 » Fri Mar 21, 2014 6:06 pm

Hi planet kite!

This thread is for heavy riders only (90 kg and more... 200 pounds and more).

If you're a 150 pounds guys and did ride and jump with a 70 pounds backpack (to feel like me), this thread is for you too

I'd like to know you're experience with kites that are fun to ride for heavy weight.

Some kites can be awesome for a 170 pounds kiter... and be so so for a heavy weight.

Which kite is the best for you?

What is your quiver?

I'm a 6'3'' 220 pounds (100kg) and ride Evos 7-9-12 (which i love) and OR Flite 17m(which i havent tried yet)
I was thinking of Rebel 7-10-13 for my next quiver...or Core XR3

I'm in freeride (60%), wave (20%), freestyle (20%)

Thanks!!!

I ride in NorCal (a windy place) and weigh 240 lbs., 6'3" too. I'm usually on surfboards and my quiver is 8-meter Rebel and 10 and 12-meter Vegas. I really like the whipping of the Vegas in bigger sizes and feel that the Rebel is best when nuking. Remember, you and I are only operating the kite in the upper half of it's intended range! That's why Rebel may not be best IMHO. I ride waves and free-ride, not really unhooking, but LOTS of jumping which is why Vegas yanks me WAY harder at the apex!

Burn45, I am a medium weight myself, but riding with friends heavier than you.

They like the EVO, well, the good old one with huge low end that is - the new ones seem to have lost that

So kites with lots of camber (= lots of pull and lowend, and less depower for us "feather" guys) is the choice.

The older EVO is one of the best in that respect.

Others can do the same (but as good as they are for heavier riders, just as bad for lighter riders because of no depower range when you are light :( )

Dyno is also liked because of its power - but even for 100kg guys, it can be too much and too slow (for waveriding f.ex)

Some lighter riders like crazy low end too, so there ARE some kites out there, who will fit +100kg guys perfect :thumb:

I am 6'2" and 196lbs and ride a quiver of Core XR3 15/11/8m. I used to kite with a Flysurfer Speed 21m in LW on a LW TT but now I only ride on a LW surf so the 21m is too slow to have fun. With my XR3 15m and a good LW surf I still continue to ride with my friends on their TT and 21m or XR3 19m so I am happy with this setup. For the waves I really like my XR3 8m. I like the large wind range of the XR3, fast turning and the bar. It might not be the best kite for heavy riders but for me it is certainly one that fit my style. Try some if you can.

Wainman Big Momma. Some people mistake it for a light wind kite, but for me it has been the perfect big-guy kite @ 6'3" - 235lbs. (Probably closer to 245lbs when you add soaking wetsuit, booties and harness) Works for me from 16-17mph up to 25-28mph. Rock solid in the air, spills power when you need to and drifts well. The delta shape seems to work well for the wave and freeride that I enjoy. I boost big off wave ramps, but I'm definitely not a freestyle tricks-type of rider. I ride a Mako.

Note: Mine is a 2010, so I can't personally vouch for the 2014's

ps - I didn't love my 2012 12m rabbit. Not grunty enough for me unless the wind was nukin'. Replaced it with a 13m Renegade. Much happier!

Rode Cabrinha Crossbow LW series 16, 13 and 9 for 2012/2013.
They pull like a truck and enjoyed them as they are great quality kites.
Just changed my quiver this year to Core XR3 19, 13.5 and 9.
German quality, not cheap but you get what you pay for.
6'2" 290 lbs plus gear weight and water.

I have 2014 Core xr3 15, 2011 Crossbow 16, 2013 Edge 19 and by far the kite I like the most is the Edge 19 with 32m lines it makes all my jumps way loooonger and it behaves so nice and easy and lifts so well when the wind is not so strong that it makes me smile every time I jump :thumb:

In the brands we carry, Cabrinha, Slingshot and Airush would be....

Cabrinha Switchblade, LW Contra

Slingshot Rally, LW Turbine

Airush Lithium, LW Lithium One or Zero

Obviously there is loads of info on almost any brand you can think of on KF .
