Check out Jason Roper at 2:43, seems he has his inside power lines hooked into a line on his harness, instead of a chicken loop hooked to the harness. Is this to allow greater lateral movement? No emergency release, and no leash?

Its a sliding harness setup (looks like he leaves his spreader bar hook still on the bar to use at other times - most grind the hook off). The release is a whichard shakle (it releases but there is controversy as to how well it does under load). No leash in the waves. you want one pull to be free of the kite.
edit: And yea, sliding harness alows your body to open up more on the wave. Unhooking allows even greater freedom of movement.

Back to the 90's
The wichard was a very common release, and it was very well known for refusing to open under load.
Quite surprised by the vid , nice riding , but why do we use a kite leash ?
To protect others not us, granted there his kite would only catch a few birds, but the risk is after release it catching a bystander .

I am super confused........
I was led to believe that nobody over that way could kitesurf for a damn other than little Mr. Sean Bob Marley boy.
It would appear that James and the other fellow in this video have shown us far more than Sean ever did.
Now I just don't know what to believe!!!
.
.
Nice kitesurfing James.

You can do something similar with a push-away release and a better wichard snap hook.
