Kiteboard car rental nightmare

Postby Burness » Wed May 07, 2014 2:44 am

We needed to book a minivan or something big enough to carry my Deceiver bag on a trip to the Tampa area two weeks ago. Searched online and found

Beware of

What you think is simply a reservation is actually a non refundable agreement. You cannot change or cancel a reservation despite their own agreement indicating that I will be billed upon returning my rental car. I did not pick up my car and actually cancelled the reservation days before. Hertz did not receive any of my $800.00. It was kept by for a service which was not provided.

I highly recommend that you don't book anything through unless you want your vacation ruined by dishonest people. :nono:

But you got your bank/credit card to get the money back from hotwire, or not yet?
Call the bank, fraud department.

Here's something that most people probably have no clue about:

A ""reservation" with Hertz means basically nothing. Your reserving a price only "if" they have a car.

I live in a small town and am at the airport more than I sometimes want to be. I see people fly in and go to the Hertz counter only to find they don't have any cars available all the time. Then people say, "but I have a reservation". Sorry, means nothing but a price guarantee.

Kills me. Don't call it a reservation! Call it a price guarentee.

Good luck with your money.

Speaking of car rentals

We recently went to Roatan and rented a pickup truck. Maybe this is normal in countries outside of NA but I was pretty surprised by what was required to rent our truck
I had to prepay for the rental, plus a $3000 deposit, plus they took an imprint of my card and made me sign it (blank)... just in case I didn't come back they said....
The woman even tried to get the pin to my credit card! She claimed the cord didn't reach the desk, I simply walked behind and pinned in making sure to cover the keys!

It all worked out in the end but wow!

Sounds like rentals from hell. Everywhere ive been in europe is reasonible. However, you are correct, i have always got a car but never the one i booked. Usually similer or better.

Because of this i recently brought my handiracks on a snowboard holiday. Blow up roof racks. Only an extra 1.5kg. Perfect if the car has a small boot (trunk). Turned out i had a massive upgrade and could have fit the kitchen sink in the truck they gave instead of the economey hatchback i booked and paid for. But i was prepaired whatever the car.

Sounds brutal!

I almost always use Avis, they have never left me without a car even if they had to upgrade me to a convertible Mercedes for free (has happened).

The blank signature is common throughout Central America, they've done it to me at every car rental I've done in Nicaragua and Costa Rica. I personally despise such a system as it makes me very uncomfortable. The only offset is that dealing with a large international group like Avis gives me enough confidence to do it since I feel I have recourse to a larger entity, but pushes me away from smaller, local operators that frequently offer a better daily price.
