What are the differences? Which kite would you choose?

What year Evo are you asking about? The 2014 Evo took a very different turn than the 2013 and earlier Evos.

Either year, I would pick the evo. I've seen a ridiculous amount of bridle wraps on the kahoonas, 2013, 2014, and 2015. I find the relaunch sucks, and if the kite slams or rolls funny, it does not reopen easily or at all sometimes. I've heard it has changed a lot of the years, I've only flown smaller size kahoonas 2012s and they seemed ok.

The 2014 Evos are a way different kite, they seem like they are more high aspect but really fast too! Also the quality of the construction is impressive. I don't feel like that have much low end, but sufficient to get going and once rockin they pull pretty good.

I would simply call the kahoona a kite. It works, flies, does good things but requires some attention and skill to make the most out of it.

The evo is more user friendly.

Maybe things have changed in 2013 and newer, but the 2010-2012 kahoonas I had and rode were the most user friendly, forgiving, easiest to fly kites I've ever ridden :o Did Best really mess it up that badly on the newer ones?

A buddy of mine had the 2009 before they added the bridle deflectors. His would wrap the bridle often, but mine never had an issue.

My 2010 Kahoona has a tendacy to twist after a crash which i blame on the 2-strut design. A kit with a central strut wouldnt do this. Now i would avoid any kite having 2 struts and no central strut.

Kahoona has 4 struts, but true no central strut. I never had a problem with twisting. What part of it twists after crashing? I can't picture it.

I cannot speak to the Kahoona and won't try to compare them, but I will say that within the North lineup the Evo would fit the bill well for a kite that does freeride/strapless/airs. Not saying that it's better or worse, but you would definitely not be disappointed with the 2014 Evo for what you're looking for in a kite. See if you can demo them both, or at least get a good look at construction/design of the kite and bar in person.
