Kitesurfing near Reykjavik start oct. ??

Postby Rejnhold » Fri Sep 19, 2014 12:03 pm

Hi. I am going to Reykjavik start oct. and have a couple of days to spend - was thinking about bringing kite gear as it is only like 50€ with WOW. Is there any places near Reykjavik - reachable by taxi… and what about weather - kite size?
Best regards

COLD...

maximum of 6C but average of 4C.

You'll certainly need a good wetsuit!

We do kitesurf all year round over here. Drysuit season is coming up in a few days (or 6/5/4 wet).

Yes, there are good spots near Reykjavík. The closest one is Seltjarnarnes (5-10 min. drive from downtown).

I would say a 12m + something smaller, maybe a 7m.

Just found some really cool youtube drone shots of the bay we often kite on called Grótta (near the lighthouse).

That looks really cool :D . And thanks a lot for pointing out a spot. How is Seltjarnarnes ? Flat water or waves? What about the depth?

No prob.

The bay used to be a closed of ocean lake long before. So there are shallow reefs which closes the bay off and sometimes gives good waves out there. Inside is pretty flat in Icelandic terms because chop is all we know (except for off shore sessions). The bay is pretty shallow so you have to be careful on low tide. (it's got some big rocks in a few places, most of them close to the beach)

There are other places as well like Álftanes south of Reykjavík which is a 15-20 min. drive. Those two places are our go to places, Álftanes and Seltjarnarnes. I live in between those two so for me it's 15 min. to each place. I think I'm spoiled rotten because any longer drive I feel is too far for a kite session :D

Are you here during a weekend or working days?

Hi. That sounds great. I have two days for kitesurfing - friday and saturday. My sweetheart will be working those two days and I thought why not bring my kite gear. Regarding kite size I have 11 and 14 - but I guess I will be looking for a 9 - and bringing 9 and 11.
best regards
Christian
