Crandon Beach Park Key Biscayne Miami FL: Rules Enforced

Postby Toby » Mon Oct 20, 2014 6:04 pm

If you want to visit Miami and ride at the beautiful Crandon Beach Park, make sure to respect the local rules.

Read the latest info from Miami Kiteboarding:

Hi dear Crandon Park kiters .

The park manager , shut down the beach yesterday : he just gave a lesson to everyone and reminded us for the beginning of the season that he takes the boundaries and regulations in place very seriously and apply a 0-TOLERANCE policy .

Our beach marshal has repeatedly call back several riders, but by the time they got back to shore - if they even did - the manager felt like shutting down

Ironically our new jetski was at service for the weekend :( which would have avoided the situation to worsen.

But in conclusion :

- if you know you can't make it upwind through the corridor = come back and give up or swicth to a bigger kite / board.
- if the marshall is calling you then you certainly violated a rule or ride in the wrong area. Comply and head back to beach or it will be a definitive expulsion
- riders who will enter the no-kite zone ( 600ft), or jump in the corridor , or not body-dragging the first 100 ft from shoreline, will be immediately EXPULSED .
- Members must sign-in IN PERSON at the beach marshal location near tower #2

We have passed directives to beach marshal and lifeguards to apply the 0-Tolerance rule.

It will be done from now on with NO EXCEPTIONS. Regardless of who is the rider , (especially if its from MKB team )!

So no need to get emotional, upset, furious or put it on those guys, they JUST ENFORCE THE RULES as the Park has mandated us to do ..and if they dont do it , the manager will still shut down the beach FOR ALL anyway .

The choice is easy on our side : 2 or 3 riders kicked out vs 20 kiters and all our lessons cancelled ? no kidding ...
Many kiters dont seem to have understood the seriousness of the rules: they want BY THE BOOK .

So we are going to stick to our contract as we are mandated to =

0-TOLERANCE whatsoever, just as it says on the Map and the Rules.

I re-attached the MAP and the new visual rules below. It is posted EVERYWHERE at Crandon :

park entrance , beach access, Kite area by the tower #2, at MKB concession.
No one can pretend not being aware of the rules !
Simply dont be the one cheating from now on, or everyone will ask you to leave as none of us want to get shut down again because of 2 or 3 individuals who don't give a dam.

thank you
the team

Shame about Crandon. Never kited there, and never will because of all the restrictions. But it would be a shame to lose the spot because people can't follow the rules.

It's hit or miss, it can be very good or it can be totally dead. This last January it was over 15 knots only 3 days, but those 3 days were very good. The previous year was over 15 knots 4 times, lots of 12 knot days in between. November and February are generally much better. It's probably the worst time for wind during the season, but if a good front rolls through it can be good

If you're not flexible enough to adapt and following the rules
it is best not to visit where the locals are enforcing the rules :nono:

If people had used common sense and courtesy, there likely would have been very few rules at Crandon. That was always too hard year after year, so instead there is an ever increase list of requirements.

Who asked for it? Why we did of course, or more accurately the riders who have kited there over the years using poor practices.

Most bans and harsh restrictions I hear about arise from the same causes. Heads up in short and promote common sense and courtesy at your launch to avoid complaints and negative consequences.

Should be good! Make sure to bring a wetsuit, since the northerly bring colder air!
Check forecast and see what you need or ask on the forum. Maybe see you there ;-)

This is how most regulations come about...its not some bureaucrat throwing their weight around...its some douche bag that has to be kept in line...without them we would be over-run with douch baggery...good for Miami Kiteboarding for organizing.

I'm certainly flexible enough to adapt to local rules. We have rules. I'm sure most people here have rules at their local spots. I'll admit I don't kite on a super densely populated beach, so maybe this is why things like being required to body drag away from shore before water-starting seems kind of absurd to me.

Don't get me wrong...I'd rather bend over backwards to appease authorities than get kiting banned, but this makes me realize how good we've got it.
