Cabrinha Phenom 2015

Postby heinzbush » Mon Nov 10, 2014 7:22 pm

Hi,

just wondering if someone has some first hand experiences with the new Cab Phenom. I hear the 2015 are from a new factory, super solid but a bit heavier...

Looking for an "all rounder" as a heavy guy (100kg) that will use the board strapless and with straps... from small waves to medium and bigger waves... intermediate skills progressing...

Thanks

At your weight i would go maybe for the secret weapon, wider and more volume, and also for that kind of not so big waves

I am 75kg and have been riding the 5'8" phenom for the past two months. I like it.

For your size get the bigger 5' 11".

Not sure on the secret weapon, it's for small waves only really and I need a board that I can use in Cape Town as well...

How much does the Phenom weigh?

I have been riding both the Cabrinha Phenom 5'8 and the Secret Weapon 5'10. Lets start with the Secret Weapon. Quad Fin set up with a full outline that gets you planing quick. The SW is pretty maneuverable for a bigger board. For a guy your weight, I feel it would be a solid choice depending on your conditions. There is more info here.

The Phenom 5'8 has an excellent combination of speed and maneuverability. The extra volume is very noticeable and the 5'11 actually has more volume than the SW. The weight is very noticeable as well. On the water not so much, but compared to a Slingshot Celeritas or Airush Cypher, its noticeably heavier.Too me, it felt little heavier than the SW 5'10. The Quad or Thruster options are nice. The 5'11 would be a better choice for you if windier conditions and bigger waves are the norm.
After trying both, I went with the 5'6" Secret Weapon as my main board. I was very impressed with the 5'10 SW. For me at 84 Kg the 5'6 should work from around 12k on a 13m Contra down to my 7m Drifter.
Below is a pic of a 5'8 Phenom and a 5'10 Secret Weapon.

Thanks for all ur comments so far!

To me, the Secret Weapon is more of a Nugget Type board if I look at the shape and what cabrinha has to say about it...

I do have a Nugget already, which I simply can not use for proper wave surfing when waves are bigger than 1-2meter! Even on the cabrinha site it says the SW is for "smaller waves"...

Therefore I thought the Phenom could be a good choice, but if it's that heavy and has so much volume, it migh not be a good alrounder... Did anyone actually weigh it? Maybe a Mitu, or a firewire is better suited...

The Phenom 5.8 is THE heaviest board I ever hand under my feets! For you would be a Mitu 5.10 the better choice. Mitu works in all conditions perfect!

Hello :bye: no one recommended the 5' 8" phenom for his weight of 100kg. The 5' 11" Phenom is for him.

As for the perceived weight of the board, it is built very tough and i do not notice the weight when riding it.

Some other boards may be lighter, but really wimpy construction in my opinion.

I believe the Mitu board will not have enough volume for him.

The 5'8" Phenom with Cabrinha GFN fins (4) weight was 4.5 Kg. This was on our shipping scale.
The board has a very solid feel to it and like the above poster says it's not very noticeable on the water.
