Ridiculous, those organized trips often bring people to Hatteras for their first time and then they return on their own or with a group of friends year after year after year.
I would never have gone to Hatteras if it wasn't for an organized trip, 6 years later and 9 visits how many people have been introduced to the island all because of one organized trip?

Biting the hand that feeds is my humble opinion.... without these trips to Hatteras these business who are complaining would have half the people to sell to. To think that just because OR organizes a trip that all those people will only buy OR? People from Canada are going to hit almost every shop down there, and we will spend money... Commercially organized trip or not.

Yup, where do you draw the line also.

I know it's slightly different but we run a trip each year to Hatteras, mainly for the amazing kiting conditions it offers partly to meet up with Epic (our main brand)...our clients in turn, spend many $ in the local shops and restaurants etc

This year we will be based in Waves once again and have a rental house but tend to eat out at least 50% of the time...it would be interesting to see how much we collectively spend in the shops like Kitty Hawk and Real each trip.

This is called tourism

Blast said it perfect.
But to add to it a lot of people would have never known about the islands if it wasn't for those small groups as well as the effect it has on food world and the money they bring in.
Plus the shops that sale the gear and clothes are winning.
It could all go away if the business start to attack the small groups.
Then what's left , everyone hurts.
I've been going to outer banks since 2001 and wow it has grown and mostly because of the perfect winds they produce for kiteboarding and other wind sports.

“The real estate companies are getting crushed and the restaurants are losing out,” he said.

Huh?! How so, houses are rented and people are definitely going to eat out occasionally not to mention spending money at local kite shops. You're on a spit of sand 50 miles out in the ocean where else are you gonna spend your money?!

back to the OP...

The Article may have a point that there is 'selling of gear' that may going on under the tax radar.

As for the crew houses...only benefit can come to the locals for those. Perhaps they should start arranging some theme/brand rentals themselves.

I have been going to hatteras for many many years now. I know TY , Jay, Lane, Dimitri , Matt from Real, Curtis from shortbus boards and many others and they always treat me like family each and everytime I have been there. Hell I have been to their houses more then once on a few of them. And yes I am from Canada ( Ontario).

I used to do the group thing but now do the family thing with the wife and kids . I do see large groups still going and renting big houses, or staying at Real or Kitty Hawk.. Which all brings in money...

I send anyone asking for lessons to one of my friends down in the OBX if they want to learn while down there. I am there to enjoy my trip and kite as much as I can so I won't even teach a friend while there. Anyone looking for a skimboard or a wakesurf I send them to Curtis at shortbus boards and yes I am a board builder and can make the boards myself. I try to help all of them out because it is their living down there and I hope in return when they come up here they do the same to for me.. I know a couple of them are going to help me out on my project that will be released very soon.

I agree that this year will Hurt the OBX some with less Canadian with the dollar but I know a lot that are still going. Hell I am looking at places for OCT NOV time the last 3 nights with the wife.
With what it will cost me I could fly someplace else warm and kite for a couple of weeks No problem with the exchange but will still make the 12-14hr drive to the OBX to meet and chat with my friends...

I know the Canadian some don't like down there and they are the ones that show up at kite point in a big bus and think they own it. been there seen it.. Hell I just laughed when they were talking and they didn't think I knew what they were saying about me and I just talked back to them in a O-SO-NICE way LOL..

that is one thing I have learnt over the years of traveling around.. I try to blend in the best I can and treat everyone fair and equal.. I am no better then anyone else and will help the best I can.

just my 2 cents
