I love my Tilley too much to risk losing it kiting. I use cheap hats.

Disclaimer: I sell these.

I've been through a lot of different hats in order to find one that offers good protection without suffering functionality for riding. I used to use the Dakine Indo Surf Hat b/c it was one of the only ones that had a stiff brim (better than the FCS Surf Bucket and others like it) that keeps it from flopping around while riding. I never used the neck flap and since it's removable, I pulled it out. The chin strap is snug, so it stays put, even when chasing students around on a waverunner.

I ended up losing mine somewhere on land and found the new Dakine Boonie to my liking. I've had it about a month or so and am really happy with it. The only thing that I might change is to add one of those little spring-loaded button bungee things (seriously, WTH do you call those things  ) to really be able to crank it down when lit up hard.

I have tried prolly a half dozen sombrero type hats...

something like these

Problem is when its windy the brim flips up. Anyone have a suggestion of a hat which has a stiffer brim.

Me and a friend are working on a hat that looks like a regular flat brim hat but has a minimalist integrated chin strap and is made of quick dry material. We're still testing prototypes but should have some limited production runs available for order in the next few months.

You are missing the point of the brim... Helmet will not keep the sun off the back of your neck and face. My needs are a bit different then others, I suffer from vertigo which is aggravated when I kite. I've found if I shield my eyes from the sun and the sun reflecting off the water and waves especially from above and the sides it helps. So a brim which does not flip up or down would be great

Laughingman, I have an Oneil surf hat with an allround brim, it has some sort of stiffener at the front so you don't suffer
the dreaded "brimflip" , I believe the Dakine Indo has something similar.
