I order both of these to try on and feel the brim etc...
1. they fit great
2. brim is very stiff, you can flip it up and it will stay flipped up but it takes way more strength then just about any wind... if I wipe out I could see it getting flipped up but that is okay
3. comfortable straps
4. They don't interfere with sunglasses

The best part is, I may look like a kook so maybe people with give me more space on the water...!
Good find Laughingman, did you order from that website? and how much $$ all in to the door?
My hat got mistakenly tossed out in the recycling bin and I'm after a new one.

Hey Bob

Yep I ordered from the Canadian site .ca
Everything you need to know is there.
Product ships from Brockville, I expedited it since we go on Vacation next week. Order arrived in two days.

I use original Gath helmet for 12 years already. Yes, it looks like gay (sorry, i meant beginner), but it fits snugly, and covers almost entire head from the sun. Quite thin, so it is not really the best protection from impacts, but definitely more sturdy than a hat.

Thanks but you are missing the point I made a few pages earlier (I actually have a Gath from my early days)
Helmet will not keep the sun off the back of your neck and face. My needs are a bit different then others, I suffer from vertigo which is aggravated when I kite. I've found if I shield my eyes from the sun and the sun reflecting off the water and waves especially from above and the sides it helps. So a brim which does not flip up or down would be great.
These hats I posted earlier today are looking very promising. Will give report in two weeks when back from vacation.

Depends on the model. In my experience the [fixed] visor
https://mpora.com/surfing/worst-surfing ... Y7pmKhF.97
does OK job in front. As for the neck, you are right, Gath is taller at the back than others, but still won't cover the neck. The helmet/hat hybrid mod on the prior page got me thinking adding something on the back...

Anyway, there is ear protection, and protection from minor impacts. As a clumsy (or just distracted) person, I got myself hit my head with the board several times when just walking and carrying out the equipment. This would be unpleasant with a hat.

So after 11 days of use I have concluded that these two hats work perfectly for kiteboarding. The brim is stiff enough to stay in place even past 25 knots, I like the bucket better as the offshore hat has a neck cover that flaps around a bit too much when kiting. but both work extremely well. Very happy with them both.
I had some extreme wipeouts and only once did I come out of the water with the hat kinda sideways on my head, never fell off once.

I got the dakine hogan hat, really like it, it has stiff rim front and back, floppy on the side and it floats. http://www.windance.com/Dakine-Hogan-Surf-Hat-THHH2676/

Looks good, disappointing though... one size... They have to know people have different size heads right?
Basically means it works, but for some it will fit perfectly and others it will be too small or too big

Have been using FCS Wet Bucket for like a decade now. Nothing comes close. Half the price of DaKine. Maybe that's why the stores are not carrying it.

It has an adjustable elastic strap above the rim to make it fit most heads, it fits mine great if adjusted right. :thumb:
