A board build

Postby TomW » Sun Aug 09, 2015 9:38 pm

Really wanted to get a Compact Surf shape board and was looking at a lot of different ones and the Daniel Thomson shapes.
I can't test any, they are very expensive now that the dollar is so strong, so I decided to make my own.
Basically a rip off of the Tomo Evo. It's 4-8 x 18, But with concave deck. Quad fin and I'll put in footstrap inserts later.
It's a replacement for my Celeritas 5-8 and complement to 5-0 spacepickel.

Nice so far. Looking forward to some action shots. The best part of a build is trying it.

Looks nice. I look forward to a full report on how that concave deck works out.

Loving the channels man. What's the rocker like?

Plummet, rocker is I'd say a lot for a kiteboard. But the concave with double concave flatten it out. It's same idea as OR Mako, which I have.
Rocker, fin placement are where the magic is, and I don't have enough boards made of same type to have sussed it out. So I try to copy the masters.

A couple other notes:
The 1.5 mm Abachi veneer with 200 g glass under is mega stiff. It's way stiffer than I expected. I should make a destruction piece and test it. I'm going to build it strong and put another 2x 200g on deck lapping the rails. That will give me 4x 200 on the rails.

The concave deck with veneer turned out really good. I'll be able to clear laminate the deck and clear coat it all with epoxy gloss flow coat. I think I'll use a sanded finish on the bottom and try a gloss deck.

I kite alone mostly and don't have a photographer following me around... Used kite line camera once but can never be bothered to mess with it kiting...

FWIW, when you do the MKII version I would drop the deck a bunch more, probably to 1-1.5cm thick overall, but keep the fattish rails. And make a fairly sharp drop onto the deck. I think the wood will let you get away with that, it will free up the flex some, drop the CG, and give a nice grab rail for strapless airs. I think my perfect board right now would be a dropped deck Vanguard or Vader. :cool2:

All good but:

Can you reveal the secret of making a concave? :)

Also, on a photo #1 you are showing us what exactly? Is it a top deck veneer, a coffee table, what is it?

Dude, there is no secret. You grind the foam away and glass it.

RTFP. It says right there it's a 1.5mm Abachi veneer.

Nice board, congrats... Could you be more specific on rocker? It looks like 5 inches rocker at the nose and no more than 1 at the tail but would appreciate more precise numbers. Thanks.
