From NC DOT on Oct. 7. (Note: Hwy. 12 on Hatteras Island is open.)

"Three areas of N.C. 12 are currently closed:

Kitty Hawk – N.C. 12/Beach Road is currently closed between Lillian Street and White Ave. Kitty Hawk Road is also closed at N.C. 12/Beach Road. The road was closed Sunday, Oct. 4, due to deep water on the road after high tidal waves washed out a portion of a sand dune near Milepost Four. The road was then damaged due to the waves on Monday, Oct. 5.

Sandbags that were part of a dune recently constructed at this location earlier this summer provided protection to the road at the southern end of the closure. The worst damage is along an area where the dune was constructed only out of sand. The section protected by sandbags did see damage but not to the extent of the section with no sandbags.

NCDOT is currently surveying the area to determine what needs to be done to repair the road, as well as the dune line.

A timeframe is not currently in place for reopening the road."

Here's the complete NC DOT Oct. 6 release on Hwy. 12:

A timeframe is not currently in place for reopening the road.

Ocracoke Island – NCDOT closed N.C. 12 on Ocracoke Island the evening of Friday, Oct. 2, due to flooding caused by a breach in the dune line along the ocean-side of the island. The closure is from the Pony Pen parking lot, north to the Hatteras ferry terminal. The closure has also resulted in the suspension of the Ocracoke-Hatteras ferry route.

NCDOT crews are currently working to repair the dune; however, sound-side flooding is now resulting in continued deep water along the road, as well as throughout the island.

A timeframe is not currently in place for reopening the road.

Cedar Island – N.C. 12 is closed from John Days Ditch going north on Cedar Island due to heavy flooding and deep water on the road.

A timeframe is not currently in place for reopening the road."

If the washed out area of Rt 12 is in Kitty Hawk, thats no problem. I'm still on 158 all the wat through there. I once made the mistake of getting on 12 right after the Wright Memorial bridge, and it took me an extra hour to get where I was going. From the looks of it, everything all the way down to Frisco Woods is still fine.
